Hi all,

Since it's now 2020, the 200 model of SN is 10 years old. Is that CCF enough? I miss the advice and thoughts shared on CCF so much. So, here it goes... it's about oil, which I know is always a REALLY fun topic here.

Last summer I purchased a 2016 Open Bow SN200. It was pretty loaded - I'm thankful to whoever purchased the boat new and took the depreciation hit.

The boat has the H5 direct injection motor. It is a great engine, and I want to take care of it properly. At the end of the 2019 I carefully did all the winterization steps including changing the oil (of course). The dealer I purchased the boat from told me that the engine needed 5W30 full synthetic oil. Some very quick research will find that this came from PCM:

I'll put that here and get around to my question in my first reply.

I used Mobil 1 that specified it is DEXOS Gen 2 compliant. Cool enough. And, because I know people are wondering, I used a NAPA Gold (WIX) filter.

My whole reason for this post is that I recently learned that Costco is selling "Kirkland" branded full-synthetic motor oil. The 5W30 is clearly labeled DEXOS Gen 2. And, it is $25 for 10 quarts. That's a screaming good deal.

https://www.costco.com/kirkland-signature-5w-30-full-synthetic-motor-oil-5-quart%2c-2-pack.product.100527865.html" rel="nofollow - Costco 5W30 Full Synthetic Oil

Does anyone here know where Costco gets their oil? Do you think we can trust it or stick with the Mobil 1? I'm willing to spend a bit more for good stuff, but if I can save a money every time I change the oil I will. That's more $ for boat gas!

Also - does anyone else here have any experience with the H5 engine? Any pointers or things to look out for? I've got less than 200 hours on my boat so it is barely broken in.

Sometimes you have to read the fine print on the back of the bottle

On this bottle in the lower left corner, it says it manufactured by Warren Distribution.

They're a huge outfit who make oil for a bunch of different retailers and they've been around for a long time

I stay out of oil discussions so.................that's all I got

AH! You have to look at the back. So, this would seem to work! Cool...

When I bought my Bentley Mulsanne I too took such a hit on my portfolio I had to save $25 on my annual oil change as well.

Kevin, PCM’s annual kit is pretty pricey for that motor, I’d be prepared to spend more than you were used to with the old Windsor.

Kevin, Kevin, Kevin...

Don't go cheap on the oil. It's not worth the risk in my opinion. Saving $25 per year comes out to 7¢ per day.

Maybe the Warren stuff is OK...but maybe Mobil1 is better. Not all synthetic oils are created equal. Warren does custom blending and packaging of lubricants -- particularly for private labels. Warren used to own a refinery in Ohio -- it was a used oil recycling refinery if I recall correctly. Vertex Energy bought that refinery about 5 years ago. I would like to know more about their base stock and if their synthetic is Group III, Group IV or Group V or a blend.

If you need me, I'll be in my laboratory blending ethanol and off-brand synthetic oils...

I can't comment on Kirkland but when an engine states use full synthetic you need to stay with that recommendation. Not that you were trying to run petroleum rather than synthetic.
Stick with oils that say Full Synthetic not just synthetic blend. The blend oils are called synthetic because they meet enough of the requirements but they do it by taking petroleum and adding enough additives to make it pass the Synthetic oil tests.
I think True Synthetics offer better protection.

Engines designed to run on synthetics will have tighter clearances in the engine and synthetics work very well in these tight clearance engines while a petroleum based product would not work or not work for long in the same environment. The synthetics also can handle higher heat better while maintaining full protection.
The newer high horsepower engines are sweet but they do have some special needs.
I don't like paying for synthetics either but with some engines you have no choice.

On the upside, Horsepower is up on these new engines and life expectations are incredible if you take care of them. Typical car engines like this run 300,000 miles without any major repairs or burning any oil so the new stuff is working.

As I said, I'm willing to spend if it produces results. I've run nothing but Mobil 1 in my truck since it was new and I've never had an issue. I will probably stick with it going forward for the boat. I do not believe that the Costco oil is a blend. It says full synthetic.

I am prepared to spend more for the H5. It's worth it. :)

I would not waste your time on such an old boat. You should offload it before it becomes obsolete. I would be most willing to help you with this issue.

Buy some and have it and you mobile1 analyzed.
Pretty routine these days.
Save some, and have it analyzed along with your used oil sample next year.

If you like Mobil 1 in your truck, run it in your boat. Walmart always has a decent price on it. It's a lot less expensive than AMSOil and probably just as good.

I have a Toyota 4Runner with 200k miles. I run Mobil 1, but a lot of the high mileage Toyota guys have had good luck with Kirkland, Amazon Basics, and Wal Mart Super Tech house brand oil. All are made by Warren and all meet the same high industry standards.

Bottom line is, it's your motor. If you can afford a boat you can certainly afford an extra $8 per oil change for Mobil 1. I'm probably wasting money on the oil in all of my vehicles, but it's cheap insurance.

I don't think "wasting money", I do agree and think that this is "cheap insurance."
