Saw this https://www.nwherald.com/2020/04/25/hoping-to-take-the-family-for-a-boat-ride-not-so-fast/an8u0x4/" rel="nofollow - article today. Can’t even ride with wife and kids? Old article, but just unbelievable that they could be taking it to this level.

Wow, if I only had enough hours in the day to address this question. I'll be retired in a couple of years if I don't go out of business first and then I'm getting the *************** out of here for good.

This is exactly where we live and boat. This idiot was only elected because of Chicago and the (D) after his name. This is the same guy who’s family “residence” is in South Dakota for the lower tax rate. Same guy who bought the Gold Coast townhouse next to his and removed the toilets then claimed it was uninhabitable to get a tax break. When caught he said oh sorry I’ll pay it back. Also the same guy who is on tape trying to buy Obama’s senate seat from the then governor Blogo. Also the same guy who goes boating and does not obey Wisconsin’s laws and gets caught speeding at night. Did I mention the guy who wants us peons to stay at home while his wife and family take a private jet to vacation in Florida a couple of weeks ago? When questioned he says “ I remember the days when your family” was not dragged into politics “ and does not answer the question. He raised our license fees another 50 bucks and our trailer fees a hundred. I have already transferred my trailer licence to Florida- it’s only 18 a year. This is all in addition to the 100 fee each boat I have to have the privilege to run on the river that my property line stakes are actually in. Plus the fact I get to pay higher taxes for living on the water as well. No wonder people are leaving.

Yup, I'm glad I bailed. When my taxes went over 18K a year, that's when the house went on the market. And, I wasn't even on the water!

$18k a year in taxes for non waterfront!!!!?? Damn! I sold my first house in 2012/13. Granted not a great area but not the ghetto, 1100 sqft, pool, half acre, taxes that year in city limits of Orlando which is higher, $425!!!!! Now I don’t want to talk about taxes on my “new” house.

I will say Larry gave the best advice, move to NC, just leave my deer alone in Rockingham County and stay the hell out of Florida.

Having recently moved from the Southside of ATL to the Northside of ATL on the water and seeing HUGE difference in EVERYTHING, I wished I would have done it YEARS ago. I feel for all y'all living in IL. What a crock of . I talk to several of our IL brethren often and hear the frustration and disbelief coming out of the windy city as it dictates what the state does and its jacked up with a capital F. I still have family in Illinois and my grandfathers farm isn't far from several of the guys here. It does make some money for my mom and if it ever comes to a point that it loses money year to year my siblings and I may end up selling family land that has been used for generations.

I always encourage those living to get the hell out of there because the taxes and everything else are gonna take away everything you've worked for. But I get it., Family close by, job, home you've worked hard to get just right and then leave. It's a tough call for sure and y'all are a rock wedged in so hard you can't think about getting out. For those that can and will. I commend you.
Friends had encouraged me to move to Fl as its skiing year round and I could even get employment at Correct Craft as my friends said Yeah, C'mon down, I'll give you a job; but I enjoy the change of seasons and Mountains too much to live where it's warm year round in Florida. 1" of snow once or twice a year in GA and I'm good so lets not get crazy and move to NE. . Besides Fl is too full of tourists and bluehairs so I don't think I could deal with everyone driving so slow.

Just texted my marina in southern WI. Apparently we can take the whole family out up there. My goal is to get the F$%&*#$%K out of this state ASAP. My property taxes will probably be close to $10K this year, and we don't have a palatial estate, and are not on water. We just have the "good fortune" of living in McHenry County, IL.

Trying to figure out how to do the Wisconsin thing in the summer, and live someplace a little warmer and tax friendly the other 11 1/2 months of the year.

Dave,
Cook isn't any better. I mentioned mine went over 18K and I lived in the "low rent" side of town. That was for a 3 bedroom, 2800 sq. ft. on 1/3 acre.

Pete.....Do you still work at HD, or are you in the wood boat business now?   A perfect fit for you, and right there in your town. You do live in a beautful part of the country....Up Nort der!

I wouldn't mind moving up there, but, I doubt I would be able to find a good Wisconsin supper club that serves a mean Brandy Old Fashioned Sour. ;) But, all those lakes may make up for it. I keep meaning to get up there to tour around some. I'm definitely gonna try to get up there this summer, and see the sights.

Your thinking of moving out of a blue state and going to a slightly less blue one - one who has less ice free boating days to boot ??? Isn't that like playing russian roulette with 2 bullets ?

Gary....Thanks for that map link. I hadn't seen that before. I'll take a look at it. You bring up good points on Wisconsin. All true! It's high tax, and it's cold as heck. But, here are some reasons I would point out that may warrant giving Wisconsin a second look vs. IL.

Summerfest
Germanfest
State Fair
Concert's
Craft brewery's/tours
Spotted Cow
Shotski's
Harley Rally's
Harley Museum
EAA Fly-In
Classic boat shows (Fontana/Lake Geneva)
Ice boating
Madison during a Badger football game....#1 Football Town in USA
Lake Geneva/walking path around the lake/Winter Festival
MANY beautiful lakes all over the state
No spotter needed when skiing
The Dells
Eagle River/Three Lakes area (largest chain of fresh water lakes in the world)
Green Lake.....I hear people tow their boats there from all over the country every July

If I have to pay high taxes, and freeze my arse off (IF we choose to stay up here in the winter) we can either do it in IL or WI.... I'll take WI every time.

Dave,
I'm still at the HD but on Covid furlough. I went on as soon as the first case was confirmed in Oneida county. Yesterday the Wisconsin supreme court overruled Gov. Ever's stay at home orders opening the state up for business so the bars are opening up. That gives you the opportunity to come north and see if any can make a Brandy Old Fashioned Sour to your liking. I have been thinking about heading back to work soon for a few hours a week. If you head up this way this summer, make sure you get in touch with me first.

Pete- So a month ago you ran home to hide because your governor said so and now with no other changes just because your court says he's wrong to tell you that your willing to go back to work and expose yourself ?
Dave get out of your comfort zone- it's a big country lots to see and do out there. Wisconsin is bordered by two of the craziest states in the union. Just how long do you think it's going to stay light blue when neighboring residents trying to escape bring their crazy ideas with them that caused their problems in the first place?

BIll, Yes NE as in New England. Too far from SEC Football and I talk funny to them up there, No Sweet Tea or Grits, and I couldn't handle only using the boats 4-5 months a year, ....Geeze Y'all $18k in property taxes and you ain't even water front??? I'm paying 1/4 of that for 1.3 acres with deep waterfront.

David does have some great points that we just get down he'ah. No German or Polish anything unless you go to Aldi during German week. Cheese Sucks, so do Brats but there are other things that y'all don't have up there. Manly is that my boats hibernate for 2 months tops and sometimes it ain't even that. I am introducing the Shot Ski to the locals and it is hanging on the wall on the patio so hopefully it will get used regularly. One good thig that came out of Wisconsin.

Gary,
Not so. I did not stay at home when Ever's put the stay at home order in place. I worked the Depot until the covid cases showed up in the county. What's still a concern and the reason I said "thinking" about returning is how the influx of summer people coming up will affect the outbreak. So far it's not bad. I check the number of cases in the county daily and it hasn't changed in over two weeks. Thankfully the HD has put many controls in place.
