Im going to dig up this old post and speculate that the '79 BFN came stock with a 13x15 3-blade Federal. I know later BFN's came stock with a 14x14, but they have a bit of the keel cut down aft of the strut- the '79 did not. Im curious what year the change was made to the hull.
Anyone out there got better info? ------------- |

My 81 BFN has a blocked off keel. I can't speak to the 80BFN.

I confirmed with Woody last week that the '79-80 BFN got the 13x15 3-blade Federal from the factory. 81+ got the notched keel which allowed them to fit the 14x14.
The Acme 612 (12.5x15.25 3-blade) is a suitable replacement for the 13x15, as would be the 470, I think. ------------- |

What has been the best prop on the BFN (86 era)? Mine is toast after GL & I am looking to replace it with something a little better on top end & a little higher RPM. Greg, I think Jim Bragg has been happy with his 13x14 Acme (1458???). That prop was made for the RH big blocks. Id like to try one on mine! ------------- |

Figured Id share a few pictures I was able to find that show the notched keep in the 81+ BFN's. This allows them to run the larger diameter (14") prop, while the 79-80 BFN's (without the notch) came with the 13x15.
(Thanks Rookie and HW/Feelgood) In other news, the 1458 arrive this week. We'll be slapping it on this weekend to see how it does- I have high hopes! In talking with Bill Weeks, theres also a 1598 that is supposed to work great on the stock 330hp big blocks. It's a 13x14 3-blade like the 1458, but has less cup (.080 vs. .135) so it turns a few more RPM's. Id like to try that too, but Acme was out of stock! ------------- |
