2003 custom built by Sport Boats, Patterson, CA
I have a very well preserved Southwind. I''''m the third owner. The first owner used at Lake Tahoe and stored indoors. They had the trailer built and upholstery re-done. The second owner only used once and accidentally left the plug in while in storage and the boat filled with water (below dipstick). While I can''''t say for certain that there aren''''t stringer issues, the floor is solid and the boat floats high in the water. The motor and transmission run great, so I didn''''t see a need to re-build. The water caused rusting, so I cleaned and used rust treatment and spray painted what I could of the motor. My intent was to slow down the rust and not to make it pretty. However, I''''ve buffed out the exterior gelcoat and paint stripe, and it looks great.
When I got the boat in 2016, almost all the running gear was original. All hoses, tranny coolers, and fuel line were 1973. Yikes!
Everything works, even the cockpit lights and map light on the dash.
Here''''s what I did, in effort to preserve the boat as original as possible without doing a major overhaul:
2017 new:
Tires
Used Carter AFB Marine Carb
Rebuilt original starter motor
Battery cables
Battery
Starter solenoid
Fuel line and fill hose
Exhaust hose
Exhaust riser o-rings
Water hoses
Shaft log hose and packing
Rudder packing
Cutlass bearing
Oil coolers
Oil pressure sender
Temperature sender
Fuel pump and added safety overflow
Converted to Pertronix ignition and rebuilt Prestolite distributor (challenging item as the right hand rotation makes parts hard to find)
Carpet (sides and floor)
2018 new:
New Holley marine carb and stainless steel fuel line
2021 new:
Fuel sender (KUS sliding shaft) The fuel tank is original and in great condition.
Steering cable
Steering post clamp block and related hardware (had to cut out old and replace new location)
Throttle and shift cable
Rebuilt battery box
Used tachometer from ebay (exact match to original)
I believe the white side panels are original as they have lime green piping. I guess lime green was the original interior.
It will go 43-45 mph and is LOUD!
The carb needs some tuning as the vacuum secondaries are kicking in and letting off too abruptly. I have the Holley secondary spring kit and quick change, but won''''t have time to play with it.
The only thing broken on this boat is the middle windshield glass. But I''''ve liked it open air for the breeze. Would be an easy replacement as it''''s just a flat square piece.
I have Correct Craft brackets for a swim platform, but have been torn with keeping it original and having to make reinforcement modifications.
My intention was to have this boat forever, but life is taking me in a fun new direction and it''''s not getting used enough. Would love to have it go to a great home.
New dual Sherwood impellers and oil a few weeks ago. I know I''''m missing other items, so please ask! For a serious buyer, we can test ride at Puddingstone Lake.
Asking $8,500 obo. Thanks.
