My first thought was indeed that they had an electronic ignition mounted, as it doesn't need the ballast, but it's a regular point distributor...

I think the resister was used when your coil didn't have a built in resistor. Getting out of what I know but I think most modern coils have resistance built in. Someone here will weigh in with real information, probably still in bed!
