I posted this over at Fiberglassics, but wanted to share it with my CCF friends as well!

My son bought his first boat today! Well, OK, I helped a bit, but he spent $100 of his own hard earned money for a boat instead of a video game! For those who have not meet him, his name is Cole and he just turned 8 two weeks ago. The boat is a 1963 Skeeto. So far, we believe it is one of about 500 made in Wisconsin. It is in unbelievable original condition, with a caution tag still on the motor describing the break-in procedure! He can not wait to start working on a restoration/preservation to get it ready for summer shows with my boats. I am not sure either one of us will sleep well tonight thinking about it!

Looks like a chip off the 'ol FINSter.

I couldn't think of a better project for you both. He'll remember working on that boat with you for the rest of his life. Good job Dad.

He looks like a proud new boat owner. If he only knew how many papers he will have to deliver to keep it going! Looks like plenty of projects for dad & son in that first picture. I am sure you both will enjoy the time spent restoring them. Congrats!

Too cool! I hope that someday I have a son that will want to work in the garage with me rather than play video games.

Definetly keep us posted on the progress. Looks like a fun little boat!

I can see it now. By the time he's 16, he'll be able to suck a blonde off a dock at 100 yds. with whatever he's driving by that time!!!!! Very cool little boat.
When people run down to the lake to see what's making that noise, you've succeeded.

I gotta agree with Zach...how cool is that!

I know what boating and skiing meant to my Dad but he could never afford a boat. When my brother bought his first outboard we were started off. It was a great sport to share with my brother and my son. So savor all the time you can...my brother's son and my own son grew up with the boats and got older on us to fast.

Brian, Love the boat and the fact that you have your son involved. I started as soon as the folks would let me put my hand on the tiller of a 5HP O/B! Now I have the same problem that every boat owner has: A boat is nothing more than a hole in the water surrounded by wood, fiberglass or metal into which you pour money! Still love it!!

Hey, why do you post such large pictures? Love the detail but it just makes it a pain to read the thread!

Agreed!...probably would have been better off getting his son hooked on crack...woulda been cheaper in the long run... & not nearly as addictive as Sweet Boats! haha

Pete- I just was not smart enough to figure out how to make them smaller. I think I got it now. You can teach an old dog new tricks! Cole is so excited to take his boat to his first ACBS show. We sent in the paperwork to sign him up for a junior membership. If all goes well at the Sandpoint, ID. show, we may take it to the International show in Cour de Lane this year. I can just picture Cole driving next to a Hacker triple!

Thanks for the other pictures M3Fan. That is the only other ones that I have found. It has enough of the same equipment that I do believe it was a production boat. The sticker on the dash says "Mold-craft" and made in Wisconsin. I have looked a little, but not found any more.

The motor is a single cylinder two stroke with a vertical shaft that goes through the bottom of the boat and connects to a tiny little 90 degree drive unit. The motor is a Westbend also made in Wisconsin and started after the third pull!

It is hard to get a perspective of how small this boat is, but here is a picture with my fat butt in it.

Look at all that engine!!! haha awesome! looks like you've got room for a nice little I-4 in there hahaha

P.s. if he does happen to be driving it next to a hacker triple, or anything of the kind...we're gonna need to see some pictures, cause that would be a sight!!

Well maybe not an I-4 but you can bet I would be looking for a 5 to 6 horse west bend to replace that little one lunger when I was feeling frisky

I HAD ONE OF THOSE!

Must have been 1978-80 and it was pretty well used at that point.

I always thought it was a Popular Mechanics home built job. I distinctly remember the bow fixture and the rear drive unit. Isn't there 2 metal couplers with offset dowels that have a fiber isolater sandwiched in between? My Dad had to have an isolator fabbed.

I also believe we had a 5hp 4 cycle that might have been transplanted before we bought it. It was a vertical shaft like you would salvage off any push mower that was sitting on the side of the road.

Keep us posted FINS!

You are right, Raindog. It is a vertical shaft with a rubber type isolator and dowels that connect the motor to the lower drive unit. Like a "dockbuster" Merc without the reverse option. Once the motor starts, you are moving forward. It does have a kill switch on the dash that grounds the motor and kills it. We got the motor running this weekend, but the float is sticking so I need to pull the incredibly complex carb apart.

I would have thought it was a home made type job as well until I found the pictures of a second one with the exact same stickers and hardware. The previous owner is still looking for some of the documentation that her Dad had found on the numbers made and the makers history.
