Pulling Transmission....Any Concerns?

I am lining up this winters projects and I think I have found the major one for the boat. The Escort 351W in my '76 Southwind 18 is leaking oil big time from the rear main seal. I plan on pulling the engine/transmission to get at at the rear main (and paint and detail the engine as well). While I am at it, I may re-ring the pistons for better compression, but that will be a new post.

Is there a special trick or consideration in pulling the trans off, and reinstalling as long as everything is aligned the same way? Seems like I had read something about indexing the engine or trans?? Just looking for any advice before I do any harm or reinstall the wrong way.

Dave,
The indexing is for a engine rotation change only. IE: if you go from a RH to a LH engine. It's really flopping the pump in the trans around so it will build pressure for the given engine rotation.

Before you pull the engine, you should check the prop shaft to engine alignment to see if this is the cause of the seal leak. Bad alignment will blow the rear end of the trans.

Don't forget to install a new dampener plate while you have it out.

Did you run a compression and leak down to determine if the bad compression is due to rings? Forgive me if it has been brought up before!!!

I had the prop shaft straightened this past spring, and installed a new coupler and aligned it to .003 on all around the coupler when puttng it back in. So, I think the everything is in good shape there. And, I will re-check that when reinstalling as well.

Everytime I use the boat, the bilge has 1/4 qt. of engine oil in it, so I put a piece of cardboard under the engine to see where it was coming from and the rear main seems to be the main culprit.

By the way, is the dampener plate the same thing as the "flex plate" on a cars automatic transmission....or the plate that couples the engine crankshaft and the torque converter?

Well here's another case of my not reading a post closely! I'm thinking the rear trans and not the rear main of the engine. Sorry!!

Yes, the dampener is a flex plate. It's a spring loaded coupling between the flywheel and the trans input shaft.



This is a universal type with 7 sets of holes in it to fit almost any engine. The last one I got by doing a online search. Cheaper than Skidim and I didn't want to bother Eric. It's a Sachs brand. I'm assuming you have a Velvet Drive. I did need to trim the OD for my 302. My 312 I did maybe 10 years back and trimming wasn't needed.

Eric...Your advice of not dropping it on my feet was also very good. I got the engine pulled out this weekend, and the transmission and bellhousing off. That tranny is HEAVY.

Rear Main Seal Question....The boat is a '76 (351 Escort), the engine runs fine but does have a bad oil leak (rear main seal is bad). Does anyone know if the rear main seals used in '76 was the rope type? Someone told me they thought it was.

SKIDIM has a two peice neoprene rubber one they say will fit right in. If there is a rope type in there now, there may be a little nub on the cap that holds the rope in place. Anybody have experience with that?? I assume it will have to be machined off to get the neopreone two peice to fit in properly.

The engine is going to be my winter project. It is currently Escort White, and looks bad from years of use. I am going to paint it dark Ford blue and get it looking good.

David- if it does in fact have a rope seal there will be what looks like pin to keep the rope from turning.I can't remember if it's in the cap or the block but it does pull out.When I get a chance I'll check my Ford book-

David the pin is supposed to be in the cap and my Ford book says be careful when you remove the pin, you want to support the cap so you don't spring it. The your supposed to put silicone in the pin hole so it dont leak
