On a 95 Nautique, I had read that the packing for the prop shaft was 3/16", but after replacing it last weekend it seemed like there was plenty of room for 1/4" packing. I actually was able to fit four pieces of the 3/16" in the nut. Does anyone know for sure what size it takes, or does it really matter?
Thanks,
Mark

It does matter. 3/16" packing in a gland meant for 1/4" will leak like crazy. You have to measure the old stuff or the nut itself to confirm what you need- CC was not all that consistent on which sizes they used.

Easiest way to measure - See if a 3/16 or 1/4 inch drill bit will fit in the gap.

Thanks everyone. 1/4" looks and feels right to me so I will change it.
