I have a 1970 Correct Craft with a 351 Cleveland built by Holman Moody. Additionally, the boat has a V-Drive. I have not been able to find any documentation on the web for this engine other than those articles referencing the 351C used in automobiles during the same time period and nothing on the V-Drive. Further, it's my understanding that there are two types of 351C; a 2 bolt and a 4 bolt (?).

My questions are in regard to maintenance. What type of oil and what weight oil should I use for the engine? What about the V-Drive? What brand and size of oil filter should I use? What other consumables do I need to replace on a regular basis? This is my first boat and I have not used it very much. I intend to use it a lot more but need to be educated on these matters but, again, there is little or no documentation to refer too. Assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the site, but please tell us more about your boat.
You do not have a 351 C, but rather a 351 W. which is a slightly different version of a 302, as they share a lot of common parts.
This is a common motor used in our boats. I will also be a reverse rotation also.
Oil filter will be a FL1-A MotorCraft, I prefer to use Shell Rotella, but any any that have a ZDDP level of 1200/ 1500 ppm will satisfy your motors flat tappett cams needs.   Boat dr

Is there a particular weight oil such as 10W 30 I should use or is Shell Rotella the only thing Shell makes? What about the rest of my questions; can anyone help me with those?

Welcome to CCfan. It's always great to have another member on board. If you don't know what model you have, take a look in the reference section or the diaries. If you give us the length, we'll be able to tell you which hull it is.

I'd say chanches are high that you have a Crusader V box hooked up to that H/M. I'm sure others will comment but I believe they ran straight 30 weight oil in them.

Get us some pictures!! There's also a spot in the diaries section to submit photos and some text on yourself and the boat. We'd love to see you added.

It's the straight weight Rotella's that have the high ZDDP levels. Valvolene racing (VR1) multi weights are a good choice as well. Many here are running the 20-50 VR1.

I kind of blasted through the initial posts and didnt catch the v-drive reference but then the "Torino" in the last post caught my eye. A rare boat and a favorite of mine. Did not PCM have a motor for a couple of years they called a Clev-or???
A 351-W motor with Cleveland heads and a modified intake? or am I still dreaming??
Hobby Boats can be expensive when the hobbyist is limited on their own skill and expertise.

Im pretty sure youre dreaming.

Ive seen a picture of a set of Cleveland marine exhaust manifolds- so there were a handful marinized (either Clevelands or Clevors). It sure wasnt anytime recently though- and there sure couldnt have been very many made.

75 Tique - I'm new to the web site and to the forum. I purchased the boat a couple of years ago but, as I mentioned earlier, I haven't used it very much as there are some mechanical and electrical problems I've been trying to over come. I was told by the previous owner that the engine was rebuilt a few years ago, which I believe, but something is not right. The fiberglass and the enterior were completely restored by the previous owner and I have to say he did an exceptional job; it looks great. The wiring is the original wiring from 1970 and I intend to replace it before the summer as there are problems such as the wiring behind the dash getting hot, fuses blowing, and a short some where that drains the battery within two or three hours of driving it. On the up side, its pretty fast (55 - 60 mph) and fun to drive. It sounds a like a race car when you get it wide open.

FI Inboards and TRBenj - I can't answer your question. I don't know if its a 351 Cleveland or 351 Windsor. How do I tell? I thought the previous owner told me it was Cleveland but I could be mistaken.

Its a Windsor- but post a picture if you want us to positively ID it.

Have you GPS'd the boat? The H-M 351 powered Torino/Seperator may very well have been the fastest inboard to ever come out of the CC factory, but we've yet to see any documented proof of exactly how fast they were. 55mph could very well be in the ballpark- but you'll find that there are people here building CC's of many flavors into pretty fast boats... so unsubstantiated claims arent encouraged!

TRBenj - Thank you for the welcome. My claim of 55 to 60 mph is unsubstantiated, I won't argue with you there. Its just an educated guess. I'll be more careful about making claims in the future as I don't want to mislead anyone. Thank you for the advise.

Also, I just joined the web site today and haven't figured out how or where to post pictures yet. I'm sure, after spending some time on the site, I'll figure out how to do so.

TRBenj - I just discovered that pictues of the boat are already on this web site. I guess the previous owner posted them. If you look under diaries, type in 1970 to 1970 Torino two boats come up. The one that says "sold" is the boat I own. There are no pictures of the engine but I would be happy to post or email one.

He used to be a regular here on the site- he documented the work he did on the boat. It came out real nice.

Thats a beauty. We all followed Scott's rebuild at the time and were very impressed. Given his obvious meticulousness, I'm surprised about the performance issues, but he sold it shortly after completing it and may not have discovered some of the bugs.

I'll give him the benefit of the doubt that he didn't know about the mechanical and electrical issues. He told me that he had restored the fiberglass and the interior - and he did a beautiful job. He said the engine had been rebuilt by the previous owner, that he was not a mechanic, and that he had not done any mechanical work on the boat.

So at this point it really doesn't matter if he knew or didn't know about the problems. Its a beautiful boat and I want to finish the restoration, repair what needs to be repaired, and learn to maintain it properly. I've taken the boat out maybe 10 times since I've had it and the rest of the time its been sitting in my garage.

That is a great looking boat and is very stylish with great lines during a time that bread box ski boats were in Vogue. Sounds like the boat does have a windsor motor but for the doubters that PCM played and marketed a Clevor motor here is a site the re-lives the ideas of mating cleveland heads to a windsor motor. and yes PCM did it and marketed it but it was very short lived and most of the very limited units were recalled from the field. http://www.mustangandfords.com/techarticles/engine/30220_clevor_engine/index.html

Where is the boat located now? Scott did that restoration right down the street from me, I spoke to him many times during the process and went and looked at it a couple of times.

The paint and interior came out really nice.

Charlotte. I prefer Badin Lake which is east of Charlotte. My friends and family prefer Lake Norman. We usually split our time between those two lakes.

Lake Norman is home to a few CCFans including reidp, a premier classic CC owner, owner of the 09 Orange Crush CCFan boat and partner in Race City Marine, a hobby turned the new CC dealer north of Charlotte. Anything you need for your boat, they can help you with (Mooresville). Badin is a little closer to where I visit. I try to spend a couple weeks a year outside Pinehurst, with the intent of moving there some day. Maybe we can coordinate a trip to Badin this summer after your get your boat right. I'd really like to see it (read: take a ride in it)
