Can't find the oil anywhere. Valvoline discontinued it. I have been told I can just replace with Dexron. If this is true do I just add it on my next service? Does anyone have a line on 20W oil? This is for the tranny!

Dont stress about it. PCM started using ATF in the transmissions for reasons other than the availability of 20w oil. ATF has some detergents in it, so it prevents the buildup of sludge. I made the switch in my '90 before I had used up my 20w oil- its a pretty straightforward conversion.

Both the CC dealer and mechanic I have used said just replace it and don't worry about flushing it. I will play it safe and do the flushing. Cheap insurance!

Maybe the dealer and the mechanic need some work! Do the flushing. The recommendation comes from Eric at Fantastic Finish Marine. He's our "resident" on site trans expert. He rebuilds them all the time and infact, there are many marina's that send the trans's to him. I can say without a doubt, he's see the insides of more trans's that most marine mechanics will ever see in their life. |

Flush it well this is a PCM recomendation. Does your transmission have the tube sticking up from the top of the selector housing? |

I am in California.... Sorry, I need to fix my profile http://www.doitbest.com/Motor+oils-Warren+Oil+Co+Inc-model-702126-doitbest-sku-579617.dib Found 20W here. I know now I can convert to Dexron... I would just rather keep putting 20W though.... |

You've stated that youre having trouble finding 20w, and we told you that switching to ATF is not only OK, but recommended by PCM. Im confused. |

If I was unable to find 20W then I would have no choice to switch. My boat has 1200 hours of trouble free operation (I just replaced the exhaust manifolds and risers but I think that still passes for trouble free and was pretty easy). I change my fluids religiously at 50 for the engine and 100 for the tranny. I guess I feel like if the 20W has done fine for the past 20 years. Why change!

Because ATF is now recommended and is more readily available? I made the switch at ~1250 hrs, FWIW. |

Sorry for the confusion but that first link you provided was from the UK.
It doesn't look like "River Dave" is tuned into any inboards or V drives that use the PCM trans (or others) so it's too bad you ended up there. But, now that you have found CCfan, take the advice and switch it over to the ATF. |

Interesting the Skidim guys would say to continue to use 20w....
I like the guys suggestion on how to get more of the oil out. http://www.planetnautique.com/vb3/showthread.php?2557-transmission-oil-change-from-20W-to-ATF-(1.23-1-PCM) |

20 wt oil does not have foaming agents unlike ATF, Borg Warner does use straight weight oils in low rpm diesel applications up to 3000 rpms, and after that recommends ATF, once an oil foams it loses its ability to lubricate and cool, just like insulation in the walls of your home. ATF does have friction agents in its chemistry to hold the clutches tighter, back in the earlier days on higher hp applications you would run type F "ford fluid" because of the friction agents which would hold the clutches tighter than normal atf.
A transmission does operate on co-effieciency of friction and im sure at one point on a test stand in Podiva Italy they performed tests on the break away point of clutches and found that the 20w didnt perform as well as the atf.. |

Eric,
Did you go to the PN thread? It's interesting that "skinautique2001" replaced his 20W with a "high mileage" ATF to keep the seals "conditioned" Have fun getting that one apart if you ever see it in your shop!!! Those PN members should stick with adding towers and sound systems on their boats!! Of course, both require tools so maybe I should back off on that comment! |

I hope your comment was in jest! Never said I did not believe you. I realize that going to Dexron is recommended by PCM and CCF folks. I also appreciate the time folks here have taken to respond and educate me. The right thing to do is to take the time and properly flush out all of the 20W and convert to Dexron. My quest for knowledge (and 20W oil) was to simply keep my 20 year old boat running for another 20 years. The damn kids college accounts will keep me from every buying a new CC. I guess my fear is changing to something new from something that has been rock solid. Added to the fear is the mixing of the oil if one does not get all of the old oil out. |

Flushing is better than simply draining once and refilling, but if you dont get 100% of the 20w out, youre still OK with ATF. Per Eric, the 2 fluids ARE compatible.

the PCMs are very sensitive to alignment also, I can attest to that, new drum 328.00 s and g kit 153.00 clutch kit 250.00, and labor....so, if you want 20 more years out of it, check your alignment. the 1.23's can handle a touch moreso than the 1:1.
I was just shocked on how PCM raised their pricing |

Does switching to ATF apply to the 1:1s as well as the 1:1.23s?
On the copy of the 1993 Engine manual I downloaded from this site, someone had crossed out the 20 20 and written in "Dextron II" specifically. |

Is there any way of knowing what type oil is already in the transmission? Colour difference?
