    Posted: June-03-2011 at 9:53pm
I am the original owner of an 88 Martinique with less than 700 hrs. Recently, if you drive the boat hard for several hours of sking, the "ignition switch" on the dash pops out. If you let it cool for several hours, it can be reset.

I want to replace it and I have a source, but no one knows the amperage. on the original switch. The new switches range from 15 to 30 amps. The electrical diagram in my owners manual does not list the amps either.

Dave,
There's two problems that will cause a breaker to pop. The first is a problem which is actually causing a overload. The second and I feel more likely to be the cause, is the low cost cheap breakers CC used!!

Ether way, the first thing I highly suggest doing is hooking up a VOM or DMM with a 20 amp DC range in series with the breaker to find out what the load actually is. If it is caused by a overload, you do NOT want to start a wiring meltdown!!! Off hand, I'd say it's a 15 amp but we'll do some checking for you. Has anyone ever been messing with the wiring and adding loads incorrectly to that circuit?

Welcome to CCfan.

How about some pictures? Also, get some pictures and some text submitted for the diaries. There's a link in that section to click on. You being the original owner, you should have a interesting story!

Dave,
It's a 20 amp!!!!! If you get any reading close to the 20 amp, you may have to use a clamp on amp meter or a shunt on the VOM or DMM. If it does draw over 20, the worst you will do is blow the fuse inside the meter. Report back on the load and we'll see what we can do to help you find the problem.

Thanks Poobah - It's not the engine breaker, but a push-on/ push-off breaker on the dash panel. It is marked "ignition" and when you push it to the off position, it kills the entire electrical system on the boat. My local boat shop has replacement switches/breakers that are used in Hurricane Deck Boats, but they range from 15 to 30 amps. Just trying to find the right one without providing too much amperage and starting a meltdown on the boat

Dave,
That is a circuit breaker. Being honest here, if you can't handle the suggested tests, then I suggest some help. As mentioned, you do not what to have a "melt down"!! Once again, has anyone ever been messing with the electrics? Add ons?

The electrical system has never been messed with. I checked my test meter and I don't know if it will handle 20 amps DC voltage to do the test you suggested. It only shows dc ma voltage. I think that means
direct current milli amps.

Dave,
If your meter only has a ma. range on it, you'll need to borrow or buy one with a DC 20 amp range. The alternate as mentioned, is a clamp on that will plug into the meter so you can use the ma. range. Careful as all clamp ons do not read DC current. I just want you to be on the safe side here and make sure you don't have a problem that's causing the breaker to trip.

Thanks! I will try and borrow a meter with a 20 amp DC range. I just want to keep the boat safe in the future! Thanks for the electrical diagram showing the 20 amp breaker.

Dave,
Great to hear you will be doing some testing. Too many times a problem like this will simply be "corrected" by replacing the breaker (common to the PN and wakeboarder.com group!! ) They simply do not understand the potential hazard!

Don't forget to report back.

I know that Nautiqueparts sells the new CC breakers. Their website suggests that 20amp is the correct one for that ignition switch. I'd try to get someone on the phone though, to make sure you definitely get the correct one. The physical bodies of them are all the same, so you can wind up with the wrong one.

Dave,
Avoid the dealers unless you're due for a colonoscopy.

Nautique Parts Dash Push Buttons

They don't seem to be too bad on prices. They're not as good as skidim, but not too far off, and SkiDim doesn't seem to have that particular switch. They tend to have a good selection of oddball hull-body parts, like glovebox hinges etc.

That said, I recently ordered a 20amp breaker and they sent me a 10, so that's why I would try to get them on the phone for that one. Buy yeah, as always, it makes sense to shop around.

I found the site today (Nautiqueparts.com). There is a problem with their shipping. They quoted over $17 to ship this switch less than 200 miles. They are checking the rate and will advise tomorrow. Thanks for the SkiDim site. I will keep it for the future.

I stand corrected, or at least the situation changed,

Now, ski dim does have that particular switch:

Got it fixed. Circuit was not overloaded, just a cir.breaker on the edge of failure. Nautiqueparts.com worked out the shipping problems. Installed the new cir. breaker and all is well with the Matinique at the present time. Thanks for everyone's help!!
