Hello, I have a 1994 sport. Last fall I replaced the rope in the rudder shaft and winterized the boat and put it away. Then when I took the boat out in the spring/summer, I noticed that the steering turned sharp one way but not the other. Then today I pulled the floor out to see why this was happening and observed the bolt that holds the steering cable onto the rudder arm was hitting the bottom of the gas tank platform. This was not allowing the rudder to turn fully one way.

So, I disconnected the rudder arm to see if I possibly had it put together wrong, (Maybe upside down)but it appears it will only go on one way. I can't for the life of me figure this out. Has anyone seen or have had this problem before?? Any suggestions would be helpful, Thanks

Pics would help.
For thousands of years men have felt the irresistible urge to go to sea, and many of them died. Things got better after they invented boats.

David,
The only other possibility is the cables slipped out of position on the tube clamp block. It's where the cable attaches to the hull.

I thought about that also, but minus everything else, the rudder arm, when attached to the steering cable hits the bottom of the aluminum frame that holds the gas tank in. I thought I had the bolt in upside down, but it only goes one way.

Then I thought I had (And still might)the ruddar lever upside down. Does the bend in the rudder lever go down or up???

I would post pics but don't know how to post them.

Dave,
Up or down but it depends on the position of the tube clamp bracket. The cable should be pretty parallel to the tiller arm. Down is preferred for the overhung loading on the rudder port.

For pictures, you need to use the "post reply" and not the "quick". You'll find an icon of a tree with an up arrow on it. Clicking it will bring up a browse window allowing you to pick the pictures from your computer. Re sizing to the CCfan site screen size is recommended.

Thanks for responding so quick. I attached the rudder arm facing down and the bolt now clears. Just to be sure, when I attached the arm to the ruddar, the clam bolt was facing the rear of the boat. (Didn't seem right) I checked the tube and it has not moved. So if the arm clamps from the rear, I've got it, if not same problem.
