I just purchased a 1998 Ski Nautique with a carburated PCM 351. The boat sat for awhile so the carb was gummed up really bad. After a rebuild, I'm having a problem with the engine stalling when put into gear, unless I let the boat warm-up for at least 5-10 minutes at the marina (which makes it a little difficult to unload). Any suggestions?

My '79 SN PCM 351 (and most others from what I've heard) is cold blooded but it doesn't take 5-10 minutes. Usually once the trailer is in the water and get it started I will let it run for about a minute before I try to put it in gear. Usually by that time it's warm enough not to stall. Once it reaches normal operating temperature it runs great. Here are a few things to check:
1. Make sure your choke is operating properly 2. You may need to adjust your idle mixture screws. Mine would stall sometimes when put into gear this spring and a half turn on both idle mixture screws cleared it right up. 3. You may need to adjust your idle speed, if it's too low the engine will stall when put into gear. |

Getting rid of the electric choke is poor advice IMHO if set correctly it will be by far much better than a manual choke. Maunal chokes are great if you have a stick and can feather the clutch a little but since I have not seen a boat with a manual tranny I would not recommend changing it. You just need to remember to move the throtle completely open then back to neutral so that the choke is set before you start the engine if you are having trouble or it idles funny adjust the choke richer or leaner depending on the condition.
