I have a vibration above 35mph, but below is smooth as silk, the faster I go the more vibration. Could this be a shaft or maybe its called a cutlas bearing?

Check for a bent prop shaft. Aft of the strut will cause more problems. It's best to use a dial indicator on the prop taper. Is the prop ok and balanced? Is the prop securely seated on it's taper (key in correct position)? Was the prop lapped to the shaft? How much axial play is there in the cutlass? (if you feel any, it's time for a new one)

I have play in the cutlas is there any place to buy this cheaper than nautiqueparts? or is $100 about right? Do I need any special tools?

Mike,
You haven't bn spending enough time here on CCfan!  The cutlass issue just came up within a week. Here's a source for the cutlass bearing. No special tools are needed except the dial indicator if you check the shaft. I recommend it. There are plenty of great threads on the cutlass R&R. |

Mike, a quick redneck yacht surveyor tip to ID a bent shaft taper or ill fitting propeller.
I use these techniques with great success every day on large inboard installations. Nobody ever surveys a ski boat. On these jobs I usually have two brokers, a buyer and seller all wanting to know RIGHT NOW why the boat vibrates. I do not have time to dial shafts during a short haul although I agree with Pete. It will tell you 100% You could also take the shotgun approach. You have to change the bearing anyway right? To do that you have to pull the prop and shaft. Just drop them both off at the prop shop and tell them to check everything. They will put the shaft on a lathe and straighten it if its bent. They will balance and repair you prop and fit the drive hub tapers as well. Put it all together and align the engine to a fresh bearing and all bases are covered. The above would be my first course of action. The below is just for fun if you are really curious. One may soap up the shaft bearing, apply a water source for the engine and run it in gear at idle while on the trailer. If you look dead straight at the tail end of the shaft your eyes will (or at least my eyes do) pick out any wobble of the lathe center. Looking perpedicular to the propeller you can see any wobble of propeller hub. You will also ID any shaft whip in the center section. If the boat is in the water you may find the following as general guide: Typically I find if the stuffing box is wobbling or has discernible vibration through all RPM then you have a bent shaft. If I find vibration with no stuffing box wobble or it only wobbles at a given RPM, then its normally the propeller at fault. Very rarely does an alignment issue cause vibration. It would have to be grossly miss-aligned. Have fun. John |

Sorry John but I had to have my Atom Skier surveyed for my insurance company! BTW, for a quick check on the prop shaft straightness forward of the strut, you can also use the feeler gauge trick between the coupling halves at the trans. It's part of the alignment proceedure. Unbolt, measure gap at the 4 spots with feeler gauge, rotate one coupling half 90 degrees, repeat. If gap is different and follows coupling rotation, then the shaft is bent forward of the strut. |
