I am sure some of you can identify this pylon, several of you have already, but I have forgotten what it is from. I can tell you that it is a larger diameter than the original 70 Mustang pylon. The damage to my floor will attest to that. It comes with a custom bend in the bottom. It's probably more aerodynamic that way.

I think being complete with the ring and finger makes this pylon more valuable!

A little more info;
overall length 43" length of the aluminum shank 35 1/2" diameter of the aluminum shank 2" O.D. of the ring 4" total height of the ring above aluminum shank 5" narrow part that plugs into fitting 2 1/2 " in length center of the bend is 10" above the bottom of the shank excluding the 2 1/2" narrow tip at the bottom degree of bend? I will check in the morning. I guess it is about 5 degrees. it is not something you would miss. It is apparent in the photo The chrome is in good condition and the aluminum shank is free from any major scratches or gouges. I have no idea what an old bent pylon is worth or what shipping would be. I believe I could just put a label on it and UPS it however. Here it is compared to an original 70 Mustang pylon. It has a larger ring, but is about the same length. |

I think it's the custom bend that adds value. It's one of a kind! I am sure it could be straightened with a press, but that would probably cost a couple of bucks. The PO must have tried to pull the whole cast of The Biggest Loser in a pyramid. |

Looks like one from a 80's SN. Mine has the same bend.

John, we've been over this. That aluminum pylon is the one that CC put in most boats from 1973-1975. The ring and finger is the same as the one used in the 1976-1986 boats. The diameter of the pylon is a good bit smaller- its similar in size (but not quite the same as) the earlier pylons. The bend is supposed to be there, dont try to straighten it.

Allen, this pylon would probably work for your '77. Its not *quite* period correct, but its closer than that '88-89 BFN pylon that you have.

I remember you helping me out on this one before. I just imagined the bend to be less pronounced and thought mine had been bent more than the original design. Mine looks just like the bend in yours. I would expect it to bend at the point where it is held in place by the floor if it was from pulling force. The bend is above that point. Thanks, I just didn't want to lead anyone astray. I guess I did. |

I am not familiar with prices on most of this stuff, with the exception of the things I have had to buy. I was referred to this post for a similar ring and finger minus the pylon. It sold for $225.00 plus shipping. In light of that I feel that $250.00 + shipping is a fair price.

Bill, that '69 would have the earlier style pylon, similar to my '71 Skier.

Due to several PMs about the pylon I am posting these additional photos of it that show it's condition much better.

Thanks Tim. Is this style even more unavailable. Did not think I needed one, but now think it would be very cool. More for the wish list. |

Yeah, that style is probably even less common than the aluminum ones. Pretty rare to come across one.
I agree, its very cool to ski behind the vintage boats! |

But, very easy to make if you have a lathe or have access to one. Then, all you need is the ring and finger! |

LOL, of course the pylon is easy to make, if need be, Pete! Like you said, its the ring and finger you wont find! I cant say Ive ever seen a pre-73 CC ring and finger for sale... except when attached to a pylon. And very rarely at at that.

I imagine Pete that the ring and fingers were cast bronze? Looks like there might be alot of hand finishing on the early ones so they progressed to the one like John's above with the removable finger. From there they eventually got rid of them all together I'll bet due to cost

Many times restorations do require some parts to be reproduced and replaced with an equal. I doubt there is one restoration out there that this hasn't happened. Some examples would be engine parts during a rebuild. Internal parts on gauges and even their faces requiring new parts. The best example would be wood replacement on a wood hull. (and, you don't used the old screws again!! ) The ACBS has a fairly strict policy with any restoration. I don't have the exact wording in front of me but basically it states if an original part is no longer available, it can be reproduced but must be as close as possible to the original. In the case of my ring and finger, I had an old photo showing the original CC ring and finger. I was able to enlarge it and then scale from a known dimension to get the proper dimensions for the reproduced ring and finger. BTW, the ASBS has modified their rules slightly. All the classes of boats are the same but now each class can be judged under "preserved" or "restored" rules. |

I believe the original is made from 100% pure unobtanium. I was lucky the 69 SS came with the right one or I would be the one with the beggars cup out. I was afraid to try to remove the ring from the correct one I have to have it rechromed. It needs it but it would be a sad day if I damaged it. |

Pete, I understand, hence the name of my Mustang, "Theseus Paradox". That has been debated by philosophers Heraclitus, Socrates, and Plato, among others with no real consensus. I doubt we will settle that argument on this thread. BTW, does Green Lake still exist for the reunion? After all, all of the water has been replaced with different water. |

John, There's no need to settle whatever and surly not in this thread. The ACBS has already done it! I was simply stating some facts and by no means meant to start an argument.
Jack, Have you been over on www.owwm.com? The "unobtainium" comes up I'd say daily! |

Yup, Being into old woodworking equipment, I'm over there frequently too! Some go way beyond where I am - overhead line shafts driving the belt driven equipment. Then, some even have steam engines or water wheels driving the line shafts!! |
