Buyer's Check List for 1980's SN ??

   I KNOW it's on here.  Long time guilty lurker / researcher and FINALLY >< this close to actually owning my first Nautique.

I've read the horror stories about stringer / floor rot potential and I'm still seriously considering a 2001 hull Nautique.  There is two '84s and one '86 to choose from in the not too distant area.  

I'm going to see one of the '84's tomorrow after work and I'd love to refresh my memory about the buyer's check list before I go.

PO doesn't list the hours except to say the heads were redone 200 hours ago.  It's the tri color blue boat with the basic interior and a bimini + galv trailer.  And no, there's no salt water within a couple thousand miles so I seriously doubt it's seen any.  He's owned it for 13 years and he bought a newer 196 Nautique.

FTR, the '86 has the upgraded interior on a burgandy color scheme and it looks (from pics) to be in extremely nice shape.

Wish me luck guys.  I've only been dreaming of this day for 15 years.

	I wanted a 2001 model nautique, but after reading this site realized that they are a lot of work. Scared myself into buying a boat with fiberglass stringers. Don't buy one.

	Correction, don't buy one if you do not want to work on it.

	The 84 does not have the delux interior.I like to kick back so for me that was deal breaker . Not all of us can afford a post 93 boat but thats ok . I have had my 85' for 3 years no problems. Of coarse there is always some wrenching to do. Interior cost alot, unless you can get it cheap stay away from bad ones. I got mine for 4k with a tower and PP. since added 1000 or so with ...Trailer tires aren't cheap 100$ each brakes are a couple $100 esp. on a tandeum . Bent shaft and dinged up props are costly too .It has a dryed out interior but for 2500$ it is hard to justifiy. IT been a great boat one day I might upgraded but it is nice to go camping take firewood and the dog and no worries about beating her up. Check compression, oil leaks, alignment , stringers, cracks in block or manifolds .. Bad stringers walk away .

	I ended up finding a nice '84 with tower and interior already redone. Stringers are orininal but seem pretty solid based on tapping on them and tightening the engine mounts. This was more of a starter boat to see how much use we'd get out of it and if the family was going to get into it. I'm sure we will upgrade in a couple years and selling this one shouldn't be an issue. Budget CC are pretty rare here. It's been a problem free boat for us so far. knock wood Although the trailer could use some work. I found a place to winter store it without the trailer so that'll free me up to do some serious work on it.
