Hello everyone..
I'm trying to get the steering wheel of my 78 nautique. Anyone know how to do so with out using a destructive method? |

Spray some pentrating lube, like PB blaster on the shaft/nut every day for a few days,Best case a puller will get it off. It may not have any means of attaching a puller though. It should be on a 3/4" tapered/keyed shaft, with the nut loose and flush with the end of the shaft, pull on the wheel while your buddy takes a hammer & brass drift and not very hard, hits the shaft if your lucky, it'll pop off

While we're on the topic of steering wheels. Anyone know where to get a replacement wheel that matches a '79 Ski Nautique or at least doesn't look out of place on one?
My wheel is kind of loose and tightening the screws in the hub doesn't help. |

I would suspect that your steering (helm) gear box si worn out and the entire shaft is thus loose in the assembly. Replacement is the best solution. You could try tightening the nut on the back end of the shaft (back of helm), but be careful that you do not overtighten so that the boat does not self center. |

I know it's in the wheel and not the steering box, it's just been so long since I looked at it that I can't remember what was wrong.
Going on memory something on the wheel was cracked under the center cap where the 3 spokes screw to the hub. That was causing the spokes to not stay tight. As far as I can tell the helm gear box is pretty solid. |
