Just picked up one of these and need a good mechanic in Cumming or Gainesville. PCM 351 sounds good when it is running..but it dies after about a minute. Took it out this weekend and full throttle for about a minute and it just died. Could not get it to start back up so had to get towed in.

FWIW-It wouldn't hurt to post this for the group. If you did already and I missed it, please link it for me.

On your brief description, I'd say it's a fuel flow problem. There are always other possibilities though.

Phillip, take Greg up on his offer. You will pick up a lot of knowledge about your engine and most likely solve your problem.
And....have a great CCFan buddy at Lanier!

Philip's solenoid is buzzing. He's still here...any ideas?

He does have a new battery and we replaced the solenoid; still buzzing.

Greg,
Did he tow it over to you? Check the volts to the start relay coil. Also, The base on the relay is the ground path so check it out. Between the relay frame and the block, you should get a near zero Ohm reading. Even with the buzzing, is the relay pulling in all the way? You can tell by getting a volt reading off the cable running to the starter. Did he put a cheap "Autozone" relay on it?

Thanks Billy, and Tim, and Pete<---in no particular order. I sent out a few lines and got all of you at once!

I knew the juice was looking for a place to go...it just didn't click in my head. Stagefright maybe?

I bridged his neg battery cable and bang, started right up. Shades of the 50th Masters.

He has a few other things to do, but it's a really nice boat. Picture a time capsule that's been used.

It looked like the original as with most of his boat. He has a new coil, ballast resistor, and battery; but most of the boat is as it left CC.

Greg...Thanks for helping out today. I some how got side tracked on the way home and ended up by West Marine in Flowery Branch and picked up the 2 gauge cable and the appropriate fittings. Should have it knocked out tonight or first thing in the morning running the cable. I really do appreciate the help. Thanks you so much. Hopefully there will be another mini CC event on Lanier this year. I will definitely be there.

It is a testament to the caliber of our CCFan members. Had a feeling Greg would be a big help.
Phillip, several of us are at Lanier on a regular basis. Usually on the south end. Of course, the great hospitality and smooth water up at Little River is sure hard to resist. Probably rendevous up that way again soon

I am in the middle. My family has a house boat and pontoon boat up at Port Royale. Im not far from either end of the lake. Bald Ridge is close and so is anything around Hwy 53. I am about 4 miles north of exit 17 on 400...so just about any place is pretty good.

As yall can see from my quote, all I did was channel CCF.

Most welcome Philip. Before you go crazy with those cables, see if West has some high dollar degreaser.

Also note in Pete's post that you'll need to clean up that mounting plate. Everything we bypassed is suspect.

Sorry we didn't get to the actual tune-up. Bring it back next week if you like.

Well, we now know that "mechanic" is not someone you want to take a boat to! He didn't do anything for you and Greg did! Greg, you need to open up a shop for boat/engine repair!

Phi;p,
Who was this "mechanic"? Telling us would prevent someone making the same mistake. Did he "fix" anything?

Pete, I'm not sure who he had it with yesterday. He pulled it out of that shop when he brought it over here. They were at least a week getting to it.

This boat spent its life on Lake Burton and has had a good mechanic working on it. I won't say a lot of extra effort went into it like cleaning, but shops seldom do that. The only non-original thing I saw was a bus bar under the dash. What little of it I could see was a very clean install.

To your boat shop comment...what froze me was it was dirty...ewww.

I think he has a front and/or rear main leak. I also suspect it isn't leaking much. It has the look of a slow leak over time.

Philip, something I didn't mention is to put that flame arrestor in a can of solvent. Along with that, the pulleys need to cleaned and straightened. There's all that belt dust that will work its way into the engine-not good.

While that's important, it'll keep till winter unless you have the time.

Another note: His engine had whistle clean oil in it and the engine ran very smoothly. I bet his compression is within a few points.

Got the bugger running great today. As Greg mentioned in an earlier post, someone did some rewire work and did a pretty good job. Wires are neat and tidy and wire tied so nothing is jiggling around under the dash. I did disconnect the main ground under the dash and cleaned the connector with an emory board, added some dielectric grease and screwed it back into place. I disconnected the two main harnesses under the dash cleaned the connectors and added grease. Took out the ignition breaker and key switch..cleaned them up and added some dielectric grease to them and shot a little WD 40 to loosen the key switch up.

Took her out on the lake and fired it up for a test run. Volt meter was reading 13 volts and the 351 sounded better than before...just more consistent at idle. Decided to go for it and took a 20 minute run on the lake. It ran flawless and all the gauges are much more consistent. They were not bouncing around like before. Keep your fingers crossed. Again..thanks for all the help. You guys are awesome.

I was impressed...when screwing the seat down..I only had one screw that didnt want to bite. The rest went it very tight.

Don't forget the wiring harness plug(s) at the engine. Since under the dog house get pretty damp at times, I've found plenty of green in them. I picked up something like 3 volts up to the dash when I did my Tique.

Yep..that was done too. Just spent 3 hours out on the lake pulling my son and a couple of his friends on knee boards and wake boards. She never skipped a beat. I believe this set of gremlins has been solved. Now I prepare for the next ones...LOL

The trick is learning to stay ahead of them rather than dread the day they show.

Got a few things we need to tweak on this. Hopefully you can provide some assistance on this. Perhaps this winter...the steering cable needs replacing and even sooner the stuffing box needs to be stuffed. Other than that..It should be good for the rest of the season. Most the bolt on stuff, I should be able to handle.

The shaft seal doesn't take long; give me a ring. The steering cable has a longer throw than standard so no West. Several have posted what and where to get it. Barring a cat's-a$$-trophey, those aren't too bad either.

Had it out on the lake all day today. My daughter and son knee boarding and yep...that "t" word. She ran strong all day and seemed to get even better as the day went. I love the way that 351 sounds. Before I took it up...I pressure washed the motor...obviously covering the important parts. Its still not super clean, but far better than it was consider probably had never been cleaned in 26 years.

Pep -   it may just be the paint on your manifold, but it appears that there is a puddle of fuel under the carb inlet line.   certainly something that needs to be addressed ASAP if it is fuel if it is the color of your manifold.... carry on
