What happened? Have you looked into straightening the strut and prop shaft? If the strut isn't bad to the point where it does need straightening, consider shimming it. How about some pictures of the damage? I'm of course assuming you had some underwater damage???

I was also shocked that CC had a strut for their 65. I think it is really cool that they did. They have also been exceptional working with me on this. They have responded to all my emails very quickly. A lot of confidence with buying these parts from them as they are the experts. They built it! They have all the specs on file.

I did get an estimate of $600-$700 to repair the fiberglass. The holes where the strut mounts are large enough to put your finger through from age and hits on the bottom. I was told by the other boat guy that it sounded about right. Seems high to me for such a small area but I do not know anything about fiberglass reapair. Is the price low, high, or about right? Thanks.   

Sam, 24" isn't right. 16' mustangs, skiers and tiques used 40" shafts (1" diam). Pretty sure barracudas used 41".

Although 41" is probably what the factory installed, excessive strut to prop clearance isn't good either. You just need enough room to get the prop installed, plus a puller (1/4"). If a 40" shaft gives you that, that's what I would install.

The shafts on a Barracuda and Classic are pretty long, much longer than they are suupposed to be if your only looking to have 1/2" between the strut and prop. We just put an ARE shaft in our Cuda and it measured 39.7", but the AREs measure differently than the old style shafts. A 40" ARE is going to be 1.5"-2" shorter than a 40" single taper as far as where the prop goes in relation to the strut.

A 40" single taper will fit a Barracuda with about 1.5"-2" between the prop and strut, at least on ours. The original shaft was even longer than that.

We have not run the Cuda with the shaft set up correctly, so don't know if there will be any noticable difference.

I do not have any pics and right now it is at his shop but the repair is a 12" x 6" rectangle where the strut bolts to the hull. I brought the boat down south recently as I travel for work so I don't know any guys like I do up north who can do it on the cheap. I know he is comparable to other shops in the area but I hate to pay retail and considering he probably pays his guy $15 per hour and it is about a 1 day job is annoying. I felt it important to get this done quickly so I do not cause damage to the motor or the transmission and being off the water these last couple of weeks is hard because the weather is awesome. Again, the cost of this is wearing on me as I know under slightly different circumstances, I could get this glass repair done a lot cheaper.    

I have two longer 1" single taper shafts that you could have shortened and a new key-way cut in. I can't imagine a small machine shop charging more than $50 or so to do the job. It beats the hell out of $500 for a new one.
