My 91 Barefoot (V drive) was a promo boat and was on the Barefoot circuit for a short time in '91. (Sorry, not a Cypress Gardens Boat) It has a 3rd Speedometer pitot on the transom and the 3rd speedo tube is cut and left behind in the engine compartment. Where was the third speedometer located? The backing board of the seat looks "normal" without any mounting holes.... and the rear seat looks original and unaltered. I have seen the 3rd speedometers in the rear seats or seat backing boards of the DD 80s BFNs but don't know what they did with the V- Drives. The dash has 4 small holes in a cluster where the dash mounted mirror would ordinarily sit.... but that looks more like mounting holes for a video support brace, or something along those lines. How did they deal with a third speedometer in the 91+ BFNs? |

Early Promo Correct Crafts had a third speedo mounted on the front of the engine cover for the observer to see.

Lol, what's that have to do with the price of tea in china, Steve? Can't say I've seen a 3rd speedo mounted on a 91+ bfn... Any suspect holes in the port gunnel? Behind the combing pad maybe? |

No Holes in the gunnel .....My bet is that they ran without the seat and it was mounted in the rear seat backing board .... don't see holes in the rear seat board.... but it may not be original...
I bet Jodi has pulled some BF events or seen some Promos of that vintage....he might have been 12 at the time, but he may know ..... BTW- I like Steve's random comment.... too funny. |

Have you pulled the rear seat? Could have been put right in the glass behind the seat? Thats another good guess. |

The only glass behind the seat is the removable crossmember but there is carpetted wood there

The carpeted wood backer has 2 baseball-sized vents near the center....my 92 didn't have those...I wonder if it was because of the year change or because of the use....(No back seat)....
Brian, did your BFN have small air vents in that board? |

Here's what Art said:
Steve..... I don't recall seeing the third speedometer on the invoice or build order for the boat, so it is very possible that it was installed in the field. Often times the third speedo was simply hooked up and not mounted, but rather perhaps attached to a clipboard or simply taped to the boat someplace where it would be visible to the boat judge. The requirement for a third speedometer was pretty much ignored by most officials in BF tournaments by the late '80s; it's possible that the boat went to some tournament where there was an old-school, by-the-book Chief Judge, and someone had to scramble at the last minute to install one. Been there, done that myself! We got rid of the requirement in 3-event skiing about 1968. I trust that the unused speedometer hose is either plugged off or disconnected at the pitot, otherwise you will be accumulating a steady stream of water from it while underway. If it is not plugged or disconnected, I recommend that you do that, or even eliminate it completely and patch the holes in the transom. Art So..... That's why we don't see them in later model BFNs! |
