Going to be putting my interior back together tonight on my 89' with deluxe interior. My observer seat brackets are broken and I want to update it to the new style with hinge and gas shock. Has anybody done this conversion and have any pictures of it?

I have not seen it done but have thought about it myself. Were you not able to get the original style hinges from Zach?

Pretty cool idea and it would open it up a little more to be able to get in to the bow area. Do it and post pics! :)

Aren't most of the newer boats like that? Could've sworn a friends 98 SN was like that.

The hinge on the 89 is a PIA. There is a lot more involved than just a piano hinge and a couple of struts to make it function like the latter models.

The 89's plastic seat base is fixed to the floor and the cushion sits on that. The back has that PIA of a hinge and is not designed to handle the weight if you tried to hinge the entire seat from it. You would need to almost redesign the whole seat to make it hinge up like the latter observer seats.

In the end I just removed the hinge and made a slide in setup for the seat back so it could be removed totally when access was required to under bow storage.

I think I may have my old hinge around somewhere if you can not locate one elsewhere.

I've always thought that would have been a great upgrade. I would like a newer style interior in my boat. Maybe I should just buy a newer 196 and keep mine original. Haha.

I was thinking I could prob make it work with some struts but now that you say that I'm not sure. But the sliding frame sounds like alot better idea, do you have any pics?

These pics were the prototype just to see if it would hold the seat back in place securely. Updated later with some more waterproof spacing material instead of ply and countersunk screws so they would not rub on dash gel.
