Need to do something with my 1996 196 SN. I like to slalom but im a big guy 6'7" and 240lb. I was after a acme 1442 prop but ive posted a wanted ad and a fellow user has offered a Acme 1458 prop.
I have no idea about this subject could I ask for some advice please.On the pro's and cons of the above. Cheers FLY |

The 1458 (13 x 14 w/.135 Cup) is smaller diameter and smaller pitch. So that is going to run higher RPM's and probably slower then the 1442. The slight increase in cup on the 1458 is going to be overwhelmed by all the other decreases in performance due to pitch and diameter. More importantly what are you running now, WOT RPM's and GPS speed? What are you looking to get out of a prop change?

Standard prop. I run LPG as fuel so only get about 40 mph WOT and it wont rev much above 4k. Guess this is due to LPG holding it back.
I need more grunt at the bottom end from the get go,so it helps me up on one ski. FLY |

Go get the manufacturer and size that is stamped on the prop and we'll have a better chance at helping you. Also fill us in on the engine you have. There were a number of different options in 1996.

Motor is the 351 Windsor with the red rocker covers, its 1994 not 1996.Fuel is LPG Cant get to the prop as the boats in storage but its standard 3 bladed OJ. |

There were several versions of the Ford 351w that PCM sold in 1994, and 2 different hp levels. The engine tag would tell us if you werent sure which you had. The standard engine should spin around 4400 and the HO should spin 4800. It would be nice to know what type of performance you should be expecting, and how fast you *want* to be spinning your engine before we make prop recommendations. 400rpm difference is HUGE.
The original prop on the boat would have most likely been a 14x16 OJ 3-blade, but all bets are off on what you actually have... the boat is almost 20 years old, after all. Let us know when youve had a chance to confirm what you have and we'll go from there. If you could baseline your performance with known-good numbers, that would be tremendously helpful as well. (Tach accuracy confirmed with a shop tach and top end speed confirmed with a GPS.) |
