I'm am new to inboards I have a 74 southwind. I am changing the packing out I have PTFE Flax available and the GTU. What do u all suggest? I am not keeping the boat in the water. But I do run in saltwater. Please help lm looking to do tonight or in the am and get on the water :)

Use the GTU. Be careful not to over tighten it.

went with the GTU stuffing box only had 2 standard flax in it and was 1/4" i got 1/4" gtu and installed 2 right was tight to get seated but once in it moved down to shaft with just a little friction. I hand snugged it put boat in water it was dripping when still. So i tightened it a little more by hand till it stopped but I didnt get a chance to run the boat at all b/c of getting eaten alive at the dock LOL

That seal is not dripless, it should drip a few times per minute to lubricate and cool the seal.

You should be able to get at least 3 rings in the gland. They are separate rings and not one length wrapped around the shaft in a spiral. The ring joints are staggered. If the gland runs hot, the packing nut is too tight. Here's a nice tutorial on the procedure |

Pete - That was a good coffee read, learned some things I didn't know about, like trapped air & crevice corrosion.
Do they still sell the moldable clay? That sounded like trouble! FYI for everyone " GTU is a knock off of Gore GFO, but it frays worse due to the braid design . . . made by Western Pacific Trading and sold through West Marine, is that it tends to fray easily and does not make the cleanest cuts even when using a brand new razor blade." |

I was told the when the shaft is not spinning it is to be dripless, it drips when shaft is in motion

According to the article Pete posted, the best adjustment indicator is temperature - 10 to 20 degrees more than the lake water is best
Mine does drip some at rest, but I only boat for several hours at a time & get no more than a pint of water (including from the skiers!) |

They will drip when the shaft isn't rotating. If you don't get some water through the packing, you risk burning it up and even worse scoring the shaft.
