I did some reading in the forums today looking for proper size of tires for my 87' trailer. I found out that in 88' they closed off the inside of the fender and added brakes to the trailer. Did they do this with the same trailer as the 87' or did they revise the trailer in 88' and then add on the different fender and brakes? I'm due for some trailer repair and the fenders are one of them. The brakes are another item I'd like to do. I'm clueless when it comes to trailer brakes so is there a simple add on kit for the 87' trailer? Or is it a one-off type of thing like the fenders?

...generally...you should be able to get a brand new axle assembly complete with drum brakes(no need for disc) get a tongue actuator and add the brakes lines and you will have brakes and new bearings and seals and everything-done.
its nice to have those brakes come on in a quick stop. |

theres a few ways to do it...
get out the tape measure and get the width(s) and style or shape... check your preferred source for trailer axles with brake assemblies and actuator and cobble it together which if you are handy is not too bad. hardest part will be to bend/flare the tube if you've never done it. somebody here must have done this upgrade I would think so maybe someone with more exact info will come along. |

An 87-foot trailer seems excessive for that boat.
 But the spindles are "stock". The hubs are very common. Trailerparts.com has free shipping over $250. You can buy the parts separate or in a kit. You'll need an actuator, brake lines, drums and hubs and the brakes themselves. Call trailerparts and they'll guide you through it. Also, I believe they came with 14" tires but I got 15" for mine and they fit fine. |

Somewhere in 85 they changed to 6 lugs and 15" rim. The parts are common and should be easy to find

+1... though if you need a new axle, that may need to be custom fabricated. I have not had much luck finding off the shelf replacement axles for my CC trailers. The fenders were also not a hard switch over in '88. I have seen several '86 trailers that are closed off, and several '87's that are open- so it was a bit of a mixed bag for a few years. |

I've got an 87 trailer under the 88 and they didn't come with either. I fsbricated some closeouts for the fenders out of fiberglass and used sheet metal screws to attach them with. If you add brakes to it then please keep updating the thread on parts etc as I'd like to add brakes to mine some day.

I've found some brake kits for 5200 # Axle 6 lug 5.5 but I'm not sure of any of the axle or bearing dimensions or #'s. If this develops any further I'll keep it posted.
