    Posted: May-20-2014 at 4:00am
Hey guys I just registered and this is my first post.
I'm buying my first boat which is a 1970 correct craft Newport. Its an inboard outboard. I'm not very mechanically inclined in the boat world but anyways I was just curious to what all I should do to this thing for preventative measures. I'm gonna take it to dale hollow in a month for the weekend and don't want it breaking down and ruining the weekend. So what all exactly can I do to this or should I do to it to make sure it don't break down. Does anyone ever have much problems out of the Chevy 6 cylinder that's in it? I know it needs a new fuel tank BC the steel one rotted out. Its been sitting in a barn for quite a few years but was started up running two years ago. Thanks!!!

Travis,
What outdrive unit do you have? Pictures would be great plus we love them. I'd suggest a LU oil change as well as the engine.

The steel fuel tank can be reconditioned. There are several threads on it.

The Chev 6 is a pretty strong running engine as long as the carb is clean.

Welcome to CCfan.

And also it is a nasty green color so I'm going to have it painted orange. What do you guys prefer for a spray on paint and primer on the cheaper side? A paint shop ows my dad a favor so the labor will be free.

Is it a Dark Nasty or a Light Nasty ? Either way both Nasty Greens are a very valuable collector color.   What color is the outdrive ? Nasty Black or Nasty Off-White ?

Look in my signature (on desktop, not mobile) for how to post pictures, or just click the "Post Reply" button which will bring up the full editor.

I can't say that I've seen or heard of a Newport. We're missing that year's brochure in the reference section.

Don't paint it. Show us some pics first. The gelcoat is very resilient and can be brought back to life rather easily and cheaply. Paint won't do it justice.

Ok ill try again when I get home. Its a dark green (looks like *************** green). I'm sure after it gets dusted off and waxed the green may shine again. I think white on out drive but can't remember now. And I can't find anything about a Newport neither. I think the guy is wrong about the model so I'm gonna have to get some pics on here so you guys can correct that. I'm picking up the boat this weekend and have only seen it one time.and what you mean by collectors color? Meaning I shouldn't touch the paint? You guys are a great help I love the quick replies!

If he's close, I was guessing maybe "Freeport" before you even recognized that there doesn't appear to be such an animal as a Newport.

You can see in the reference section that there was a Freeport in the late 60's - early 70's. Here's the one in the '72 booklet which may be your color (but it's a jet drive). Maybe it is a Freeport you're getting and not a "Newport"?

1972:

1968:

The mention about "collectors" is that most would prefer it to be factory original... there's a lot to be said for that.

You'll turn some heads with a puke green 1970 machine like this.

It's a pretty cool boat!

ya that'd be the one. I googled it and it looks identical. The windshield opens in the middle and it has 4 chairs back to back. Thank you!

Welcome to CCFan and lets see some pictures. You'll be surprised how many heads will turn to look at that Nasty Green. It's a time machine and probaly aren't too many Freeports around these days so you definately have a rare boat. Very cool!

Assuming the boat is factory original, the outside surface is gelcoat not paint. Gelcoat is a resin material which is applied similar to paint but is quite a bit thicker.

Depending on the condition of the Gel, if it's faded or cloudy, your free body shop guys could do a wetsand and polish/buff/wax to restore it to a shiny new look again.

First off, nobody wants to break down.

Second, it is your first boat and you're not mechanically inclined.

Third, it's 44 years old, been stored a while, hasn't recently run and the gas tank is rotting out.

Fourth, that's a big lake.

Good luck getting it off the trailer. You really should try to find an experienced boater to help evaluate this "Newport" and help you get it in proper shape before even considering getting it wet. Save the painting for later (hopefully never).

Congratulations.
Boat is a four letter word, that being said you will break down at some point as I know we all have. That's why I don't run when I see someone needing a row. Get sea tow and always have water and sunscreen bc it gets hot when you are stranded. If you're not mechanically inclined, I bet you will be soon. I doubt the engine will be a problem once plugs, wires, fluids, rotor, cap, points are changed. Check carb for obvious leaks if it runs. I suspect the lower unit to be your biggest headache. Double check your tilt/trimotor and all it's electrical connections. Find a good MARINE mechanic. Best of luck. Oh yeah, impeller and tstat too, check for any cracked hoses.

OK thank you for your helpful post. I would like to replace anything any everything that's cheap that could normally leave anyone stranded. And will definitely go through the l/u to make sure its up to par and see what all it needs. I think he said it was a mercruiser? Or somethin like that idk

You'll need a nice quality canoe paddle that fits comfortably in your wife's hands. This will be the cheapest part of the entire ordeal. Then you'll need a good battery and a flashlight and make sure your bilge pump works. Your first weekend will probably consist of looking for leaks while the wife paddles. On to the outdrive (I'm not an outdrive guy) but know these words: Gimbal Bearing, U-Joints, Pump Impeller, Bellows and Shift Boot, for MerCruiser. If anyone says: OMC Electric Shift just runaway fast.

OMG Pete, Why have you not found her a straight inboard ?

Stroker, All the MerCruiser items will more than likely need to be replaced plus the gasket between the hull and housing.

Ok so replace all gaskets in l/u & upper and check all bearings, U-Joints, Pump Impeller, Bellows and Shift Boot for wear? I'll check the bilge pump and blower too.

Ok that looks like a good site with everything I'll need. Thanks.. Since these boats are somewhat rare, I can't find anything on which mercruiser it has.. If they only put one type of upper&lower on for that year which one would it be? Mc1&R, MR & ALPHA 1, ALPHA 1 GEN II, or BRAVO 1 & II?

So, The LU is black? CC would have install any I/O on it. It was anything they get at the time considering their financial situation. Where are the pictures??

Stroker,
Most of us don't mean to sound so negative but an I/O is bad enough brand new on the show floor, then add some barn time and 44 years to it makes it even harder. In the boating world there's 2 groups of people: Outboard guys and inboard guys, no I/O guys. There is a reason for that and it is maintenance. Don't let whatever happens give you a bad taste with boating or inboards/correct crafts. Get your Freeport going for the summer, find your niche in the boating world and hopefully CC will have a boat to fill it. Start looking for a replacement after the summer. Hands down, a straight inboard with a carb'd V8 has the least maintenance, most powerful and most bang for your buck and fairly easy to work on.

You say you are picking it up this weekend, have you actually completed the transaction?

If not, you might want to consider walking away from the deal, or at least post the price so the experts here can advise.

Per above, a regular inboard may be a better choice if you are, as you say, not "mechanically inclined".

My dad had one of those OMCs,a 69 year, it may have been an Electra shift. I remember it went into gear very smooth, but that's about it did well. And we couldn't use reverse, because after we broke our 3rd electric tilt motor, we just left it out.

One good thing it did was peek my interest in wiring, because we had one full on electrical fire onboard.

Let's just say my father is currently very happy with his 8hp two stroke mercury outboard.
