Looks like Fantastic Finish Marine is out of business. Does anyone know where Eric Lavine ended up or some place I could trust to overhaul a PCM 40A 1.23 transmission?

Eric had sold the business a few years ago. I do know someone that had a velvet drive built and installed there this summer though. - as to your transmission it has been a tough one to overhaul cost effectively due to the high cost of parts. Fortunately they usually dont break. What are the symptoms?

Jim,
Did you call FFM. I'm curious about FFM going out. |

The transmission ticks very loudly when put in reverse. Seems to run fine in forward with only one slippage that I have noticed. I'm worried something might break off when in reverse in do more damage if not repaired.

Am sure the wizards on the site will say it's the dampener plate or perhaps suggest adjusting the idle. Mine rattles a bit in reverse also but no slippage. |

FFM did my transmission in August. I just called 877-369-6693 and it is still FFM.

Dampner should make noise in both directions. Does the noise exist at higher speeds in reverse? Just to check, raise your idle and see what happens. If it goes away at high speeds then maybe dampner.

Todd, I respectfully disagree. If a spring (or more) is broken on one end only, it's only loaded in one direction of rotation. |

Yes, but the damper only spins one way, right Pete? |

Engine and drive plate only spin in one direction. The output shaft of the transmission changes direction.

Zach, It's a 1:23. No spinny bacerds. |

When people run down to the lake to see what's making that noise, you've succeeded.

Yes because the water swirls the other way off the propeller. Thats why the CC boats drive so much better in the northern hemisphere and not in the southern hemisphere.

Last I heard Eric was in the Florida panhandle working on tugboats.
What is your in gear (forward) idle rpm? A low idle will rattle the trans, more so in reverse than forward. Seemingly a larger "load" on the prop trying to plow the transom through the water while the prop swirls the opposite direction it was really designed to. |

It does become inaudible if I give a good amount of gas in reverse. At just idle(700 rpmish) it ticks about once every half second. No noise at all in forward. |

Make sure you have enough fluid in there. Read your manual on how to properly check it.

I called the number above (877-369-6693) and got a voicemail. Vince called back and I am talking with him. He was going to check in with his mechanic to see if they could think of anything. Oil level is good. It has 2 quarts and is right on the line.

I've heard it's hard to have too much fluid in it, at least with the velvet drive.

The early Merc outboards had 2 starters - 1 would start it in opposite direction for reverse. I bet the drivers had fingers crossed when coming up to the dock in strong wind/current! |

http://www.correctcraftfan.com/Downloads/1999%20Owners%20Manual%20Ski.pdf Page 57 or section 8.6. Boat is level oil measures at top of dipstick. The dipstick is fully inserted. The specifications also call for 2 quarts and when I drained it a few weeks ago I sucked out just about 2 quarts and put 2 back in. |
