We had a friend bring their Ski Natique to a shop to have their steering cable replaced and the shop insisted they had to rip up the floor of the boat because the "boat was built around the steering cable". This doesn't sound right to us. Has anyone done this replacement themselves?

They are idiots. Get the cable from nautiqueparts.com or skidim..com. Your year has 2 possible options depending on the po(prior owner). If.you have a heater.this is a pain in the ars. Disconnect the steering cable from the rudder. Unscrew the cable from the steering block. Disconnect the cable from the steering assembly under the dash. 4 bolts.   Tie a rope to the.end of the cable that you disconnected from the rudder. Push the drivers seat all the way back. Clean out the storage up front. Crawl under the passengers seat. Pull the cable out from under the passengers seat through the tiny hole. Have a helper pull the cable beside the drivers seat. Once you have the rope that you attached at the rudder by the drivers seat cut the rope off the old cable. Reverse the direction with the new cable.

Ann,
Please RUN AS FAST AS YOU CAN FROM (as mentioned) these IDIOTS!!!!

Also, you need to tell us the model year of your boat. There are some years CC used special length cables that are only available from a CC dealer. Did the idiots mention that??

Jim has the proper procedure.

Well guys if it's a VDrive then yes the floor has to come out. There is just not enough room between the belly tank and the floor for the nut on the aft end of the cable to pass through. Knowing the model will sure make a difference as to how you go about it

If it's a 97 Ski Nautique it should be similar enough to my 93, I did a write up on it here:

Wow, great link, Brian. That is very helpful. Does it matter if the hull shape is different?

Hi Ann,

It should be the same procedure as long as it's not a V-drive. Gary mentioned above that it becomes more involved then.

And then still it's really not a hard job,the floor is made to come out. The hard part was that it was unexpected.
