I have a 76 ski tique with a ford 302 motor just installed, runs perfect but is leaking transmission fluid when running between bell housing and engine. The tranny is a borg warner as1-71c velvet drive with a ratio 1to1 . ive heard it could just be the front seal or does the transmission need rebuilt? I have recently aquired this boat so not sure if the tranny works or not as not had it out on the lake. Any suggestions?? your help is greatly appreciated.

From the other thread you posted your problem in;
Who told you it was just a seal problem? |

Put it in the water. Take some ATF with you. If it shifts normally and does not rotate in neutral, then all you need is the front seal. And yes you can leave the bellhousing in place.

Launching I suppose would be entirely up to you. You said it runs perfect.
I never know until I take a test ride. They can sound great on a trailer, then act differently on the water. Of coarse that's engine and not necessarily trans. We already know the trans is old, if it has sat for any length of time, it's usually the seals. |
