I'm only seeing 4450 with two people and half tank of gas. That's with the factory tach and PP. I'm not a speed demon and am fine with how things run but I know 4600+ should be more realistic/ideal. Makes me wonder what I'm leaving on the table at slalom speeds and starts? Maybe back down in pitch? What is below a 422.... 654 iirc?

I was at 4600 a few weeks ago on glass with a cooler of beer and my dog in the boat. Don't remember how much gas but I typically keep it above half full.

654 is the next one down in pitch. The motor would probably be a bit happier with a few hundred more RPM. I have an 1868 that's the next one down from that, good holeshot prop.
FWIW, I've spun my reworked 422 to 5400 before in my Sport at 50.9mph, but they don't plant the bow like a SN so it's kind of apples to oranges. 351 Pro Boss carb. |

High Output 351W. At 4,400 feet of elevation, I turn 4,850 at 43 mph using an ACME 654. This is measured with a stock CC tachometer and a Perfect Pass GPS speedometer. I realize that the question was about the 422, but the 654 is identical to a 422, but with 1/2" less pitch. All other variables consistent, I would expect the 422 to turn about 400 RPMs lower than the 654.

I've never seen anything over 45. If you can touch 47 you are doing well.
edit: Something doesn't compute. Are you saying 4450 RPM @ 47 mph? |

According to the phone, 46 flirt 47. And that's two tachs, both reading within 50 RPM's of the other. No paddle wheel on PP.

My 95 Ski Nautique with a Acme 224 will spin above 5,000. Most days 5,100 or 5,200 a few times it has hit 5,300+. MPH before prop repair was just over 50, after the prop repair due to damage the MPH is 47 but it is smooth and pulls hard.

It has been two years since I went to the 224 Acme but with the OJ 4 blade on my 95 Ski Nautique it was spinning 3,600 to ski or cruise at 32 MPH. For that reason I switched to the 224 at Tim's advice when I asked for help with a prop to slow down my RPM.
I was willing to give up a little hole shot for a quieter lower RPM cruise at 30-35 MPH. It did slow down my RPM to 32 or 3300 at the same 32 MPH and helped with top speed. I liked it more before I had to have it repaired, for some reason I lost top speed with the rapair. The Acme 4 blade is quieter, smoother and pulls hard out of the hole so it is a keeper. Have not had the opportunity to try a 422 yet but I want to, I think the change would not show much compared to my current 224. |

The 224 is a 13" dia compared to the 422 12.5" plus has slightly less cup .090 compared to .105 on the 422. Would love to give one a try myself but I feel the performance differences would be fairly small..... but hey if a trash my 422 again a think I will go for a new prop and the 224 would be on the short list

I ran mine with the OJ, 3 blade factory prop and the OJ 4 blade they both offered more noise, odd howl at certain RPM, they ran pretty well but the Acme is smoother it was a great change. I still have the two OJ's if someone needs a spare, I want to keep one.

My 89 2001 with a 422 spins 4850 at 44 mph
The factory OJ 14x16 spins 4700 but pushes the boat to 47-48mph. 422s got a meaner holeshot to |

I have never seen a move from that oj to an acme result in a 3-4mph loss in speed.
Are those numbers all correct (GPS) and taken under the same conditions (air/water temp, altitude, water/wind conditions, boat loading, etc)? |

For the most part everything was the same. GPS on my phone and my speedos agree.
I did give the motor a tune up mid summer including points & condenser. but motor felt even better following that, & wot rpm changed very little. |

On my '98 Sport I got 4,940 rpm @ 45.4 mph with the 422. I've switched back to running my 1442, the better holeshot seems to help us older guys with our skinny skis. I preferred the lower rpm at all speeds of the 422 but not that big a difference, kind of forget how the other prop performed after you run one for a few outings.
I don't know how the planted bow (like Halfnelly mentioned) of the '93 Ski affects WOT rpm. The 351 HO gives up I think 25 HP to the GT-40, or maybe it's a bit more in 1993, can't remember. I'd guess that HP difference comes into play almost all at the top end so maybe a 351 HO with a 422 should top out in the 4,500 rpm range and not higher. I can't imagine you getting more than 47 mph out of that setup, would have guessed more like 43-44 mph. |
