So my sister, who lives in Denver, has an apartment in Winter Park and runs the youth race development program sends me a text last Friday night: "John, we have more powder than we have seen in 100 years. Get here" So, me being well into my my Friday night booked a flight.
First time in 20 years of marriage I am doing something for fun all by my onesies. Felt guilty for a few minutes but it wore off. Got decent non stop mid afternoon flights. Heading straight up the hill Friday, shred the bumps on Mary Jane Saturday and Sunday. A few libations at the Pub perhaps and home Monday by 1:30 pm. Total cost is $500 plus the libations and lunch of course. Two days of moguls with big sis? Priceless! I'm dabbing right now.. you can picture that right? |

I was getting excited just reading that, epic snows and all I have been doing is plowing snow and going to work. This makes Jim a dull boy. On the other hand, do you have any idea how much potential trouble you may be in? You know your wife has a plan and you may not like it. You may be saying YES DEAR the rest of your life and then being cursed when you are in your grave. Next time give me a heads up and I will meet you there. Some things are worth the wife abuse we take.

I think JD nailed it.......Good for you John! Been in the 70's here in Atlanta for about a week and gave us taste of Spring. We had our winter two weeks ago when they called for snow that we didn't get. Temps in the teens for a couple days so as far as I'm concerned we're good! Bring on the sunshine and warmer water temps!

Yep, for the price of a stay for a weekend at a decent resort, meals, lift tickets, rentals etc. you can fuel the boat and tow vehicle for half the summer if not all of it and not freeze your assets off. |

Baitkiller, you should make it an annual trip! I used to take an annual trip out west with some guys from NC and it always amazed me how well they skied for the little bit of time they got on the slopes. You must have done a lot of skiing at sometime in the past if you love deep powder?
Tim, does the cost of the boat figure into that equation? |

Figure its a wash Bruce as most of us here have a boat anyway...... Anymore I see it like this. ....I'm a Sting fan and he's playing in Atlanta next month in a small venue. Prices start at $400. So a date with dinner plus park and I'm close to $1000. For that kinda money I can way hours and hours of enjoyment on a boat that was paid for 15 years ago and have a hellava better time with the same date, on a boat, with my ski buds all summer long for the price to see the guy. No brainer there! |

Yeah, but Sting's not getting any younger and you may not have that chance again. That said, we have a great 200 seat venue near us that often has great shows and I pass up seeing most of them as tickets are always over $100.
I love snow skiing and going out west, but the old knees are reaching the end of their ability to ski the stuff we go out there for. Fortunately, they don't seem to mind water skiing. |

Bruce is right... it's not practical to buy a ski resort.
Not a fair comparison to only factor in gas... gotta at least include registration, taxes, insurance, etc as those are recurring costs of ski boat ownership. Slip rentals, storage fees, launch fees, wear and tear on your tow vehicle may apply as well- and of course the initial boat purchase itself. Snow skiing starts to look a lot more cost effective after all that is added up. Bottom line, both sports/hobbies are expensive! I'm jealous of your trip... we have been going out west every other year to ski... this is our off year. Have done BC and WY most recently, CO may be up next. |

We go every two years. Even with my connections its stupid money for my family of five. My sister works on-mountain part time as an instructor. Lift tickets are $90 each. Last time we skied I think 6 days and I only payed for two tickets and those were reduced rate. All comps! :) That said, it was still 5K out of pocket for 8 days.
This is just a ME trip. This year is summer vacation money, cant do both unfortunately. We will do several Keys trips and a last week of summer lake house somewhere, probably Tenn. Wheels up 1400 tomorrow. Ill take pics. Riley I was born and raised in Cali. My dad was Boston bred. I could ski and skate before I could run. I built and repaired chair lifts in the Sierras as my first career before I discovered boats. Played travel hockey till I was 14. Funny thing, my entire adult life I have lived either on a mountain top or on an island. Amazing the similarities. Small town local attitude vs snowbirds or flatlanders.. same people just some wear woollies and the others wear flippy floppies. And yeah... I can ski a little. :) And I can still skate better than anyone in the rink. |

Man, enjoy. and post pics. Nothing wrong with taking a ME trip to go skiing. I do it every year.
Flying out to Jackson Hole the Saturday of Superbowl weekend. It's just been dumping and dumping out there. I hope they don't turn off the spigot before I get there. Me and two buddies did a ski trip to Park City on the end of our annual Winter Sales meeting years ago. While sitting in the hot tub with a few barley pops we basically stated that this needed to be an annual tradition so that our wives wouldn't question that we were going on this trip. Success....this year will be the 12th annual. And we've been all over the west for a week at a time. |
