Good Morning,
Can anyone tell me what the factory location is for the bilge pump on my 1982 BFN? It is currently mounted behind the engine near the shaft log. Would it be more effective near the front of the engine near the pylon or drain hole? |

Disagree with HW. Im not 100% certain they were both factory but our 79 had 2 pumps (front/rear) when it came to us. We removed the rear when we rebuilt it and only have the front now. Front is the most effective location as it is the low point when the boat is in the water.

My 87 BFN originally had one in front of the engine on an oval shaped pad that was missing when I bought the boat,(will be going back in when the wooden pad (mush) is chipped out and replaced), and it also has a second one between the shaft log and the rudder post. Can't say for sure if this rear one is factory or not as my boat has been modified (hacked up) over the years.

Splitting hairs on the low point (which varies based on use). You have the ability to remove more bilge water out with a rear pump.
If the exit is in the back why bother mounting the pump farther away. |

The most critical time the bilge pump is needed is when the boat is sitting in the water and nobody is around. Not when it's up on plane, or some other oddball loading condition (3 people sitting on the platform?). The low point of the hull at rest, with no load or a reasonably evenly distributed load, is towards the front. Mounting the pump elsewhere seems pretty silly... pumping the water a few extra feet is pretty inconsequential.

All the new DD's in the Nautique line have two bilge pumps!
Reality best location is the deepest accessible location. preference would be right near of the drain hole again provided accessibility is good. |
