Yesterday I started hearing this rattling/squeaking sound coming from the front of my engine. Turns out the alternator fan is loose. It's captured on the shaft between the pulley and the alternator body but rotates and wobbles freely.

I'll be investigating/fixing this tonight but thought I'd ask a question or two before I started. Has anyone had this happen before? How is the fan held on? It looks to me like there might have been a keyway that held it in place but I can't tell for sure.

I'm sure I'll come up with something to hold it on.

not sure on this one, but on GM's we always keyed it and then it was sandwiched between a shoulder on the shaft and the pulley.

That's how I envisioned it should be. I'm interested to see what things look like when I take it apart. Worst case I'll goop it up with some JB Weld and see how long it lasts.

I'm not positive but I suspect my engine may have the original '79 alternator and starter (1200+ hrs). If so I'm surprised they lasted this long. I'm sure they can't have a lot of life left in them.
