Regarding my flat cam,end of last season having intermitant engine miss and fuel odor,I take carb home and rebould thinkin bad power valve.Nothing looks bad in carb but you know power valves they never do unless viewed under magnafication.Well weather turns cold and i never get it out again, sits all winter new fluids etc. This spring same thing but miss is constant and running really poor sounds like its draggin 2 cyl. now.Plugs are new last year so I get a different set of wires off a buddy who recently changed his because of color(hot rod v-drive)has right ends from new set I taylor them on,same thing now I suspect protec since It seems to be draggin 2 cyl.I went to salvage yard got coil from v6 buick cut it down
this looks like its gonna work.I start checkin the spark on each cyl.one at a time last i pulled #4 plug looks funny and each cyl. has fire,I yell at my kid come here and cran this motor,I put finger on plug hole it tries to pull my finger in hole.hmmmmm drop manifoldspull rocker boxes everything looks good till I push on 4 intake just springy.I pull intake and 4 intake rocker/pushrod get lifter up and grab with pliers.Bad news hole in bottom of lifter(worn off at 20 degree angle I think this is where hit and miss was coming from)pull the rest of lifters one more in going bad also. I washed it all down with solvent andd siphon gun valve boxes lifter valley and pan from the front then I hand rotate and do it again.I put a coup[le of computer magnets on outside of pan close to drain plug.I know there is probably some bearing damage but its closin in on 1000 hrs I figure might as well keep running it,and have put about 60 on her this summer everything seems fine. Now I can't say mobile 1 caused the problem but I can say it didn't prevent it,comp cams \has a memo on new oils and recommends rotella for flat cam usage I'm using mystic JT7 its a local oil here in OKC,and lucas with that. I've seen those total cam failures at break in. and was scared to death breakin this one in but everything went well.I maybe thinkin roller when I rebiuld this motor not sure boumarine grinds in roller cams maybe some will be asvailable by then. I did learn alot about protec on this trip,Hope I never need it.... Later Munday.... |

Interesting story and good detective work. So, you changed the cam and ALL lifters? Hope so. I agree, keep running it if all is quiet and good oil pressure.
I believe most if not all new engines have roller lifters (to reduce friction and improve fuel economy). I have never really given camshaft failure a second thought, but I sure will now and use roller lifters on rebuilds whenever possible. I have heard good things about Rotella oils. |
