Friends,
Closing on a lake lot here in Florida. Need to put in a dock. Old one is shot and poorly done. Must be 40 years old lol.
Anybody have good input ?
Looked at some of the do it yourself type:
https://tommydocks.com/
http://www.bmp-inc.com/Home
https://www.floeintl.com/docks/

I'm meeting with a guy later in the week about doing the standard wood dock.
Trying to get the best bang for your buck
thanks in advance

Can you drive pilings for a permanent in your area?

Floe is the yeti of aluminum docks. Very nice. Very pricey. Expect to pay $100-125/running foot for 4’ wide for that or similar high end brands (shoremaster, etc). You probably care less about the portability (size/weight/rollers) than we do up north... assuming they’re not in and out every year. You can get some good mileage out of PT wood at a much lower price point.

Ha, now I know everybody here has an opinion because there isn’t $h1t in Florida construction wise that’s 40 years old. Here we tear it down after 15 years.

Actually Ken,
I think the fact that Pete has worked with both is a fact and not an opinion. And it’s pretty much stating very plainly: he has worked with both.

Actually Todd you're right as far as working with both.

Which leads to him somehow thinking that this must make his opinion better than TRB's or that his statement is a fact as compared to TRB's opinion

Thanks for all the repsonses.
You guys are a hoot as usual.
The area is East of Gainesville in Hawthorne.
I retired to Gainesville and ended up taking a job at UF
I went to school there in the 80s
Yes I can do pilings with a permit. ( I'm zoned Ag so taxes and other drama is low)
The dock isnt really a dock just old pilings and a few boards lol
We are just trying to get the lot good for summer use and then we will prep for building a home.
The Lake is 140 acres spring fed sand bottom that holds its water.
alot of lakes around here have died due to drought and the growth of Jax affecting the aquifer.

I'd look into a repair of the existing? and a expansion into a workable pier.

Pete must have strong feelings about Yeti.

Posts bolted to the outside of the frame are usually a sign of a budget local dock outfit... but what do I know. No one carries that brand around here- never heard of it.

I built my own for about $25 lineal foot.
Cedar deck & treated framing, hardware was DH docks out of Minn.
Sections are 4'w x 10' long, Lumber was $125 per section, hardware was about the same.
I ran by deck boards in the 10' direction, more comfortable to walk on IMO
Believe I posted on here with pics and plans.

So this a dock that doesnt have to come out every year? Cause that greatly changes my opinion on what I would want. The chance a hurricane might come buy at some point would also factor in. Weight, and adjustablity are things we pay more for here that don't matter so much there. I think I would be building with pressure treated 4x4s and heavy composite decking material.

I hope to get docks in the water this weekend - I have 5 different brands covered in the 27 sections I am putting out so if anyone wants some additional experience with different styles/brands/decking material come on by and you can get a bunch of experience.

Joe has made the appropriate distinction. Lots of good input from the north of the arctic circle guys, but perhaps a bit irrelevant when docks dont have to be removed. HW came to visit me and asked why everyone has big "patio' docks. Answer: because we can. My dock is very (very!!) modest compared to something like Reid's or Gregs, but limited to HOA limitations and plenty for me anyway. 6x6 (current dock) or 4x4 posts (former dock), framing and top. I added the low section to my current dock because I still had 5 feet to go with the rules.

My former dock, another piece of property, got a complete makeover. I'd say go the wood route. Sounds like you are half way there anyway. Kind of like my rehab project.

Thanks for all the input.
I really dont have too much of a hurricane issue.
Gainesville is considered pretty low risk for Florida
I survived Andrew so I'm pretty seasoned
We have had 2 roll through here in last 3 years and other than some river flooding and high winds <60 mph it wasnt a big deal.
The dock will not be moved.
We pretty much have 2 seasons here warm and hot.
I will be putting the boat in soon for a few test runs.
My neighbor is letting me use his ramp.

We have docks built out of 4x4" PT posts, PT framing, and Trex decking on our lake in NH. Luckily our lake is dam-controlled and the water level drops below the footing of the dock in the winter, so the dock can stay in place over the winter.

Current dock structures are 20-25yrs old, decking is 18yrs old. No issues with either aside from the occasional maintenance. I wouldn't spend the money for aluminum if the dock can stay in the water.

Agreed. I am in NC and highly jealous of my neighbors with grandfathered in standing docks. Wood with composite decking would be my choice. Cheaper, easier to work on and customize and easier to repair.

Did a Google search and found my original post on a search for a pier solution.

Drawing is in the thread. I have since expanded the piers quite a bit, the end platform is now 16'x20' and runway is 100' long.

When I was looking for a floating dock I ran across a company Called Big Docks
www.big-docks.com. I'm not sure that link will work but that is the website.    They looked really east to install. Wound up selling the house so never actually used them.
