Hello all, I have a 1975 Correct Craft Southwind 20. It has a 1989 Ford 351w reverse rotation marine crate engine. It also has points. I would like to replace the complete distributor with a pointless unit. I am not interested in converting the existing point type distributor.   For those of you that have done this can you give me suggestions on what manufacture and model distributors would be good choices?

1/3 of the crowd will ask why change distributor and go away from points? I’m partly in this category.
1/3 of crowd will say DUI Distributor. It’s and easy hookup, I have one. Big honking cap.
1/3 of crowd will hate DUI and say anything else but DUI.

Thanks for the info.   I was having problems with the points, changed a set and condenser , and was getting tacking. Also changed the coil. Still having issues. Also think the centrifugal advance is not working correctly.   In other words the current distributor is a bit old and why not go with electronic instead of a new point type. Comment are welcome.

I'm in the D.U.I. crowd.

LINK to the best distributor you can buy

Cap color is RED. Reverse Rotation. No external coil needed. Just hook up 12V feed and tach wire. Good-to-go.

Not many choices, check the thread in the link

It's an unbiased list of what's available unlike JQ's totally biased opinion based on replacing his old clapped out ignition system with some brand new 70's technology

Edit here's the link below

I'm in this 1/3 category. Rebuild the existing.

Gary,
What do you mean regarding "tacking"? You "think" the advance isn't working correctly. What's the timing light telling you?

BTW, I'm a "bit old" too but I still work!

what is happening is that at 2500 rpm or if I push the throttle out of the hole the engine will bog down. If is start slow it will go fine till 2500 rpm and then opening up more will cause it to bog down.   I have a new carb on there and am putting the old one back to see if there is a change.

It sounds like it's not getting enough fuel maybe

Have you looked at things like the fuel pump, the anti siphon valve on the tank, the suction line in the tank or any filters in the system.

If you hook a temporary tank to the fuel pump inlet and see how it runs, it'll tell you some information

If it runs good then your problem is upstream of the pump

If it still acts up, it's the pump or carburetor or maybe the ignition system.

A small gas can with a line to the pump is all you need for this troubleshooting. Make sure the can is vented so the pump can draw fuel from it.

Why did you change carburetors?

Guilty as charged. A totally biased opinion. Retro-Fit back to the 70's baby! Free bell-bottom pants with every DUI purchase...

Look into having your original points type completely restored, should work like brand new in 1967    This is my plan with prestolite
However it is always good to research what your electronic options are for backup.
I’m realizing some boats are better candidates for ALL original, classic , collector, show etc.
