Hi All,
Tried to remove my prop and there is not enough clearance between the propshaft and the rudder. Wondering if the shaft is not the correct length, or you always need to pull the rudder to remove the prop. I have 40mm (1.5 inches)clearance from the end of the shaft to the rudder, and 1.5 inches from the back of the prop to the Skeg. |

I am not sure what you are talking about ? My prop pullers are only about 6'' long they have fit every boat I ever used them on? Some pictures would help.

Martin,
Regarding the prop shaft length, what's the distance between the prop hub and the aft end of the strut? That may give us an idea if the shaft is the correct length. |

Maybe it's me with the reading comprehension problems this morning, but I think both Mike and Pete missed the point. MIke, he said nothing about a prop puller, he is saying the 1.5 inches between the end of the shaft and the rudder does not have enough clearance to fit the prop through, and Pete, unless he edited his message, he said he has 1.5 inches from the back of the prop to the strut.
That is a long gap from strut to prop, so maybe shaft is too long and a previous owner replaced shaft and put it back together with rudder off. |

1.5” strut to prop clearance is excessive for sure... but I’ve had props far back enough to have the blade tips within 1/4” of the rudder and have never had a problem removing them. Are you having clearance issues with the prop (during removal/install) or the puller itself? What type of puller if the latter? Pics would help a lot. Presumably you’ve tried steering the rudder one way or the other to gain some space, that’s pretty normal.

Yes, my ADD kicked in again and I did miss the 1.5" between the prop and strut. Maybe it the "skeg" term they use downunder. Thanks for filling me in. |

My Shamrock and Acme with their rake are like that,you have to get it just right. Federals are no problem since they are like pancakes. Shaft length is a tad on the long side,if I ever change it I'll get one shorter.
It's also possible that the shaft he has is not fully seated into the coupler,I'd check that as well |

While the shaft could be shorted a bit, it is not going to help the clearance much. Good point with the shaft coupling not being seated properly, I will check. First time I have pulled a prop, and watched Utube videos that showed heaps of clearance. 3 blade prop, It looks like i just need to wiggle it and the rudder and hold my mouth right. Sorry strut, We do refer to it as a Skeg in Oz, maybe it is a bad use of that word. |

I also noticed some play in the rudder, up and down so I might just drop the rudder anyway, just don't want to drop it every time I pull the Prop.
Regarding the Rudder, is it just the packing I should replace, or are there other things in the rudder post, (O-rings etc) that i should inspect? |
