    Posted: April-20-2020 at 9:44pm
First time owner of a 91 Ski Nautique. I just picked the boat up this past weekend. I’m going to be changing the oil And filter for the first time this week. I’ve seen a lot of controversial posts about brand of oil, weight, and even capacity amount to fill the 351.

I would like to know ultimately, which oil brand, weight, capacity, and which filter would be best to use for my 91 ski nautique.

Thank you!

Any brand with decent amounts of ZDDP.

Regarding filters, just stay away from the basic Fram. Motorcraft, Wix and Napa Gold are good and don't cost much.

Hate to say it but if you've seen a lot of controversial posts about oil and filter related stuff, why would you think this one will turn out any different?

It sounds like you've probably reviewed plenty of threads here on CCF already and it all comes down to people's opinions and preferences

As far as the amount, being a 91, it probably has a 1.23 to 1 transmission and an engine that sits pretty level and 5 quarts including the filter sounds reasonable.

My opinion...........I'd put in 4 quarts, fire it up to ensure the filter is full , turn it off and let the oil settle and then add enough to get it to the Full mark on the dipstick. ( with the boat either in the water on sitting at about the same angle on the trailer as when it's in the water)

And by the way..........welcome to CCF

Thank you for the info! Would you also happen to have oil filter brands that you recommend as well as the oil filter #s for each brand?

Filters are like the oil itself, lots of personal preference but if you start with a number like Motorcraft FL-1A or Fram PH-8A you can cross reference to whatever brand you want for your 351W.

Trevor,
Just drive over to the Napa at 2212 Webster St and ask for a Napa Gold 1515 filter.

Trevor,
I'm curious what oil did you decide on that has the ZDDP that your flat tappet engine needs.

Trevor,
Keep in mind that manual is 29 years old. A lot has happened with oils since then especially the use of muti viscosities.

The previous owner I bought It from has been using Mobil 1 10w-30SAE in the 6 years that he’s owned the boat. If you have a better suggestion though, I’m all ears.

Per the Mobile specs, the regular Mobile 1 10-30 has 800 PPM of phosphorus and 900 PPM of zinc. That's good level for flat tappet engines.

Eh, that’s 30% less than the more typical M1 choice here (15w50) at 1200/1300ppm.

Not many people here running an oil that thin. 15w40, 20w40 and 15w50 are more common choices.

My Walmart stocks Mobil 1 15w50 and motorcraft fl-1a filters. Makes it an easy choice for availability and cost. There are many other choices but that has been easiest for me to find from all of the good recommendations on this site.

Not to add any controversy just an option. The Diesel Oils come in 15-40W and offer great protection for your flat tappet camshaft at a reasonable price. I use Delo, Rotella or Castrol. Diesel oil in my flat tappet engines today.
It works, not saying it is the best but it works just fine.   Sits on the shelf at Walmart. just off to the side of the Automotive oils.

On Filters, Fram advertises a lot but the quality of the Fram low priced filter is pretty darn low.   That is why many say to avoid them.

Wix, Hastings and a couple others manufacture a quality filter, they cost a little more but you get what you pay for.   Wix makes the Napa Gold line and it is a good filter.

Motorcraft contracts someone else to build filters for them but these are usually to a high standard.

There are many nightmare stories about cheap filters causing issues. Good to avoid the brand X brands.

I have used Champion Brand filters sold by Federal-Mogul, now Driv industries.   They are made in S America but seemed to work fine and the company does supply OEM filters to some companies.   We cut some open, they seem to be a nice Mid grade filter. Pep Boys sells them. Not as nice as the Wix but much better than the low price Fram.

If you go to Napa make sure you specify the Napa Gold or you may be sold one of the low cost low quality filters.   Napa stocks both, Gold for people that request quality and the off brand for those that only look at price.

I use one of these oil filters

It uses single ply toilet paper as the element

Once upon a time it was cheap and plentiful
