Has anyone run one of the "DJ" (Dj G21 Pump On Ebay) South-Korean made aftermarket replacement for the G20/G21? I have a G20 that i rebuilt last year and works fine, but the pulley uses a hollow pin, key, and "E" clip to retain the pulley on the shaft. There is a good bit of fretting and wear and despite my efforts i haven't been able to get the pulley to hold snug and not wobble a little under light tension. I haven't wanted to risk making it inoperable by less than stellar backwoods machining or committed to welding it on square. I didn't want to give up a working pump as a core so i opted for the new foreign aftermarket pump ($280) and will play with my G20 at my leisure now. The pumps are pretty simple and i don't doubt that it will work, just curious if anyone knows if they are built to a similar set of dimensions and have interchangable internals with the sherwood pumps.

I will get the pump in two days and install it. My hope is that with a few shims i can get the pulley to run true with others, but my fear is that the misalignment that caused the last pulley connection to start to fail may plague my efforts..

I can't get the search function to work right now, but i recall reading some threads that went over persuading the rwp bracket to a new position to assist in alignment. Does anyone have some tips if i am unable to shim to an acceptable alignment?

The most obvious difference from the Ebay pictures is that the cam screw is missing, so the internal cam must be held in differently or it's a part of the housing in that pump.

I guess you can take it apart enough to see what the internals look like when you get it

I'm curious if the bearing housing side is bronze or just paint.

DJ has been around for a while

Here's a link to a few year old catalog.

I'll guess it's bronze Gary

The casting is solid and not painted. Looks good overall. Will update if there is a premature failure.

"solid" what?
If it's bronze, then it sure is a funny color. I agree it sure looks like paint.

Maybe you should read the catalog I linked yesterday Pete and that might help you decide if they're a fly by night operation or maybe a company that's been around for a while making some decent pumps and parts.

Don't sweat it Wisco

I did try but I'm currently having problems with the internet and it wouldn't open. . I'll try again tomorrow and hopefully you won't criticize me again but that would be an absolute miracle.

Maybe since he has the pump now, Wisco could take a magnet and see if the pump body and the bearing housing are both non magnetic unlike the Sherwood that has a bronze body and cast iron bearing housing

Must be a mood thing huh Pete?

Why didn't you get worked up a couple of days ago when I helped find a picture for you.

I mentioned that that boat was a 72 Skier and not a Mustang like you thought.

I was expecting some Pete crap for the "correction" as you would call it, but instead you thanked me. Go figure

I can confirm that the Sherwood bearing side is cast. I was tearing down the old pump today to sandblast it and i forgot about the snap ring in between the seal and the bearings. I was trying to not destroy the seal in the hopes of reusing it. The hydraulic press reminded me that the snap ring was still there. Hope the DJ pump works out well because I no longer have a spare

Well now you need to grab a magnet and answer the question from a few posts back

You won't break anything with the magnet

Both castings are magnetic, so I guess they are both iron. . And I bought the magnets at HF instead of faxing in an order to McMaster-Carr.

The surface finish on the machined flats and threads looked like it was done out of a single piece of bronze/something soft so they had me fooled.

Also, not sure if I can quote from another thread, but I want Pete to know that I finally took his advice and found a friendly millwright for the first time in 5 years to help me with boat stuff, and the picture above is what happened...

They really should try to make the "bronze" paint look more like bronze!

Cole,
A fax to McMaster? Are you still in their big yellow catalog?

Well I guess I had that guess wrong Pete

So what are you saying above, the millwright broke the housing? Did you give him an exploded view or manual to work with or just assume he must know how to take it apart?

Well it seems like there's more to this story.

I just happened to have one of these pumps show up at my house today so being curious about things like the painted bearing housing that must be cast iron, I put a magnet on it and it was mildly magnetic, but not nearly as much as cast iron

Then I drilled a little dimple into the housing and I must admit, them South Koreans use some super penetrating paint, it goes all the way through the metal.

So I figure this is a bronze alloy that's slightly magnetic

The pump housing is non magnetic just like the Sherwood pump

Then I took it apart enough to see the difference in the cam and internals.

The Sherwood cam is separate and held in with that external screw that everybody uses to get their pump mounting figured out,

The DJ has the cam cast right in

The Sherwood uses an O ring on the pump housing and a paper gasket on the bearing housing end with the end plate sandwiched in between.

The DJ uses O rings on both housings and no paper gasket.

And if you think it's weird that the bronze alloy is magnetic, grab a magnet and put it on your rudder, strut, NiBrAl prop etc and see if they're slightly magnetic

I'm sure we can all form our own conclusions about which pump we like better.

Just showed up?? How did they know where to send it? They should send one to a guy for a saltwater test... Any indication on the packaging of where it comes from Ken?
And your right about the magnet except it does not stick to my strut

Yep, just showed up after I clicked "buy it now" and waited a few days for it to get a ride from Boise Idaho

DJ pump is in South Korea.

Sometimes if you want good info, there's only one way to find out

I’m curious about the pump too but dropping $300 on it because I’m curious and want to play with it and drill it is hard for me to justify, even harder to justify to Mrs. Orlando76. Kinda like women, I see some models I’m curious about but the Mrs. really doesn’t want me buying them for $300 so I just look at my proven trusty pump under the doghouse and think how lucky I am to have a good model.
