Prop shaft bearing

I just aligned my prop shaft after rebuilding my transmission.   I’m still getting loud vibration from the rear (running out of water on the trailer).   Should there be any play in the shaft in the rear at the bearing?    I can grab the prop, and get about a quarter inch of movement out of it.   I’ve got .004” gap around the coupling.    

I’m replacing the prop anyways w a new one, should I go ahead and replace the bearing while I’m at it?    

Oh, 88 ski nautique if that matters to you.

1/4” movement is way too much and when running it out of the water it needs to be lubricated. It is really best not to be putting it in gear when out of the water. A new bearing won’t have any side movement.

Explain the gap around the coupling more. Between the trans coupling faces? If so, there shouldn't be any gap.

Every video and everything I read said to have a .003” - .005” gap between the couplings before attaching bolts when aligning the engine.   

The play isn’t 1/4” at the bearing, it’s at the end of the shaft, if that makes sense.   It’s only a tiny bit of movement in the bearing.     How hard is that bearing to replace?   I may just go ahead and do it when I replace the prop (mine took a hit last year and has a good bend in it).

The .005 is way off spec. .003 is MAX and that's the max difference. Here's a quote from another thread where I believe there was a misunderstanding on what the .003 is.

Where did you find the .005 spec?

When you put the new prop on, don't forget to lap it to the taper.

If you are in gear with the prop turning OUT OF THE WATER then I'm not surprised that you are getting some noise and vibration. The strut bearings are designed to be water lubricated and cooled. If you do run - out of the water - with the engine running and the prop turning, make sure that you are getting adequate water to the bearing. Some people use a little dish soap as an additional lubricant. Just be careful as you are dealing with a spinning propeller!
