Good Evening!!

I recently purchased a 74 Mustang, had been sitting for a couple years.  The engine was never winterized and the mechanic has his doubts on refurbing it.  What does everyone recommend?  Should I go with a short block and try to reuse the heads or play it safe with a long block/ drop in?

Thanks!

BWC

I’m thinking I’d want a definitive visual diagnosis that the block is shot before making engine change plans.

Report back.

Bryce,
What specifics is the mechanic saying about the condition of the engine? What tests if any has he done?

I'm gonna make this wild guess that you're in Belgrade Lakes Maine and another wild guess that an engine that wasn't winterized up there where it gets mildly chilly in the winter has some freeze damage Wink

I'd also figure that the exhaust manifolds would be damaged right about now too.

I'll also use my psychic powers and figure that you graduated from the Kings Point Merchant Marine Academy in 2019 and work at Bath Iron works

My psychic powers are named "Google" by the way. Wink

All that aside, there's a place in Skowhegan called Marshall Machine that sells rebuilt marine engines, long blocks, short blocks etc.

I used up all my powers and can't be sure what your engine is, but I bet you and your mechanic could go talk to them about options when you know what the issues are.

By the way...............welcome to CCF and nice area up there.

You could also send a PM to a member here, screen name "Riley" who's not too far from you and he could be pretty helpful with info and maybe parts too.

I'd fix your "link" again, but you need to figure this out for yourself Wink

But as a hint, get rid of some of that junk before the www. when you're pasting it

Corrosion on all but 3 cylinders, cracked piston on cylinder 1, he wasn’t sure it would even turn over. Also a minor leak on the bottom of the oil pan

Amazing just how little privacy we have these days.

Bath Iron Works...as a 4 year resident of Brunswick (do the math, and no, not the NAS) the big  BIW crane is a standout landmark

“Well, let me see…sun burn, stiff neck, screwed up back, assorted aches and pains….yup, my weekend was great, thanks for asking.”
