This past weekend my "Oil" light would flash and the alarm would beep a few times and then go away (seemed to beep and flash 2-3 times and then stop).

Also, every time I slowed down to pick-up the rider black smoke would start coming out of the stern of the boat.

Any ideas? I checked the oil level...that was good. I checked the engine temperature...that was good.

I'd check a few more things and give the pros here some history on the boat...

Joel, How many hours are on the engine and what kind of use has it seen. I have a feeling that it's time for a compression and leak down test to determine how sick it is!!!

Thanks for the input guys. It has 420 hours on the engine. I haven't put many hours on her this year at all and it recently sat in storage for close to 2 months prior to this past weekend. Last year we probably put 140-150 hours on the boat.

I did notice this past weekend that the bilge was pumping out water that looked like it had more discoloration in it than ever before. By discoloration I mean, it looked to be gas/water mix or gas/oil mix.

Also, when we slowed down to idle speed the engine vibration was very noticeable and not normal. It would only seriously vibrate occasionally, but the black smoke was pretty constant when we decelerated.

Let me know your thoughts and thanks in advance.

Black smoke is typically carburation, needle/float issues.

I received this from the mechanic at Mid-West Correct Craft:

The warning system on your boat while state of the art at the time has been problematic over the years. I would be more concerned what your oil pressure says. You should be using SAE 40 oil not a multi grade like 10W40, I have seen 454s spin bearings with multi grade oils.I would suspect you may need a new carburetor. You should tune up the engine & check that the Choke is opening properly before you make that decision. As for excessive gas/oil in bilge You should check for leaks.

I currently use Valvoline High Performance 40 W oil...we did have the carburetor adjusted last year due to the seating mechanism. Probably should replace the carburetor? Or should I get one of those Holley carb kits?

Take the flame arrestor off and look down the carb bore when you decellerate. I would assume that there is gas dripping into the carb when you get the black smoke causing a rich condition. A float is stuck and/or misadjusted or there is a needle and seat that is dirty and letting gas go through when it shouldn't. It's only happening when you throttle down because the gas being thrown forward in the bowls of the carb. I would just guess that a float is the problem. If it was a needle/seat I think you would be seeing a rich condition all the time instead of just when you decellerate but I could certainly be wrong.

When people run down to the lake to see what's making that noise, you've succeeded.

Why would multi weight spin bearings?

I had a similar problem, but mine would smoke some on start up too. Wound up I had a pinhole in one of my brass floats. The gas ended up washing down into the crankcase from the full carb after each use and the oil got contaminated. I was very suprised at how much gas got in (or how little it takes to wreck your oil). I wonder if your oil is getting diluted and dropping your pressure.

Try reducing the choke. Most these boats with the choke set straight up the middle end up with too much choke for too long.
