Once again I rebuilt a Paragon for a guy in which the experienced marina did the install, its insurance work so to date i havnt been paid, anyways the trans is knocking and was told the trans needs to come out and repaired due to the knock and clatter noise per the marinas instructions. so i decided before they pull the trans i would take the 4 hour round trip and check things out. I supplied them with a new damper in which thier 20 year mechanic decided that it looked good and chose not to replace. i put a timing light on the engine because the owner said it was in time, I was at 13 degrees and it should be a at 8, it smoothed the engine right out. I noticed the front inboard mount was cranked up a inch higher than the rest, so i removed the coupling bolts and the coupling easily split. i checked alignment it had .030 on the inboard side and the coupling was touching on the other side, the best is yet to come, the coupling pilot was a 1/8 inch smaller allowing it to slopily pilot into the trans coupling, in no way could this thing ever have been correct.
I'll keep posting when i hear the Marinas reply

Eric,
The transmission looks great, thanks. Can't wait to get it in the boat. Still need to rebuild my carb, get new hoses and that will about do it. I still need one of your cool damper plates. Call me when you get one in. The story above is exactly why I asked you to do the work on my transmission. I don't know anything about transmission work and didn't have any local contacts. I am sure there are good local boat transmission shops around here but which one? After reading many posts in CCF where you gave good clear advise it made me comfortable shipping my transmission across the country to have it fixed at your shop. Yes it was a lot of money (on my budget), but I feel like I got a great deal and have confidence in all the work done.

no its on a 42 Chris Craft roamer, the marinas mechanic was insistant on the trans being the problem so thats why i did a surprise attck on Saturday, the boat owner was convinced there was a trans problem until i went step by step what was happening, the clincher was i unhooked the shaft and the trans ran smooth as pie. I always try to keep the marinas name out of the picture because its always thier 20 year mechanics that cause the problems. as of now i told the customer to order a new shaft and coupling and I'll go back up and start from the beginning.... with pay of coarse

Dude, I get one or 2 of these a summer, its insurance work so nothing gets missed dollar wise, the insurance company wont issue a check until the job is complete and the customer is satisfied, he has the marina telling him all different things because im sure they havnt been paid also, the whole thing really started because the owner thinks the marina slung the boat wrong on the travel lift and may have set it down on the strut and prop and bent everything
