Reid, My son is home for Thanksgiving and when talking CC's your name came up!! I was showing him your collection of boats and just happened to notice the lighting in the building. Is it the newer T5 HO florescent? It's hard to see if it is the T5 or just HID. I've been looking at the T5 for my retirement shop. I'm going for 100 plus FC/sq.ft. and 5000 Kelvin temp for good color rendering. I need the light for my old age as well as planning on a bathroom!! I don't want to have to run into the house every 15 minutes!! What do you have for lighting?

I have the t-5's in my shop, its going on 3 and a half years and i have yet to replace one, none of the ends have turned black and thay are as bright as day one, I dont any way to compare the efficiency of them but was told they are very efficient, I hate halogens...Im glad i went with the t5's

Erik, My understanding on the new T5 fluorescents is unlike the traditional T12's or T8's they run on much higher frequencys (into the radiowave area). Consequently they don't use the same anode and cathode on the end that will cause the ends of the tubes to turn black. With high tech coatings on the inside of the tube and this high frequency current, they get a average life of 30,000 hours!! All this and almost twice the light output and running on about half the power as other lighting including the HID's (high intensity discharge). I feel you made a smart move with the T5's. Do you know who's fixtures and the type? What is the mounting height?

they are at 16 ft, we had a light engineer come in and spec them, i believe i paid $120.00 per ficture with 6 bulbs in each, it was a hard sell but we bought them and at this point i wouldnt use anything else

damn close, you wouldnt regret the purchase if you chose to go that route, i hate the halogens, you'll get dark spots, they take to long to warm up and so on. I recently dusted them and brought the shine right back, what a difference cleaning them makes

Erik, I've been meaning to ask this but have always forgotten, I'm just curious, what other boating sites do you frequent and post on?
Also, I think you are confusing halogen and HID lighting. HID (high intensity discharge) would be the mercury vapor (older outside and inside industrial), high and low pressure sodium (the orange color street lighting) and metal halide lamps (the typical high bay lights). The halogen are the fancy incandescents that burn white hot. Remember when they first came out, people were starting fires with them being to close to things like drapes. High bay lighting will not leave dark spots if the proper fixture and spacing is used. |

basically the only site i go on is CCF, its a good group of guys, 79 is the guy that kept me coming back, Even though i dont own a CC and feel at times im the outsider i still enjoy posting and reading posts from guys like yourself and others, It may have been a touch of self gain in the begining, but ive been at it for 24 or so years and over the years have built up a pretty good customer base, i try to post some of the situations that have happened in the past which were mistakes on my part and i learned from them and try to pass it on to the novice and hopefully they wont make the mistake. i do learn alot of things from the site and will be the first to admit it. I do what i do for a living and enjoy it and try to pass on the experiences and mistakes on, its easy to hammer someone on transmission work for boats, but my philosophy is i charge what i think i should pay within reason and try to educate in the process so you dont get hammered on repairs that you cant do yourself.
As for the lighting I am very happy with the t-5's and it again is something i am passing on to you as you passed on the difference of Halogens |

i once told the Boat Doc i was past that and there was a long pause on the phone. I do see one in the future, I still am a boat owner, if you remember i still have the Maxum locked up behind my shop and in my eyes it has a new owner and to boot it is loaded with ski equipment and hopefully a full tank of gas
