If it goes to 6k when the starter is turning you have an issue with a short between the start and ignition circuits. The move to 200 when the ignition is on could point to the same thing.

I had a problem with the tacho on my little car, same kind of issues. I ran a jumper wire straight from the coil to by pass the signal wire in the loom and it was fine. I spoke to an instrument specialist and he suggested putting a resistor in the signal wire and that cured it straight off.

If the tach is set on the 8 cyl, and wired correctly then there is a internal problem. I do not know anyone who does repairs on these Teleflex tachs. If you found someone who is really into electronics and is willing to take a look at it, it would be your only choice unless someone else has a idea.

with the key on the tach should read 0, with it off it doesn't matter where it goes. Sounds like something is reversed or it's not the right resistance.

Sam, You've got the tach correctly wired! What's not working properly? Bad readings? Do you have the number of cylinder jumper set correct?

I have a Teleflex tach in my 73 nautique. I am not sure the model number. But i can tell you that the face has the blue pin stripe circle. Anyway the problem is the wires are not the same colors as the tach I removed. The colors I have now are :

Red
Blue
Grey
Black

I think red is +
Black   -
Grey coil
Blue is light

I tried the tach wired like this and it didnt work properly.

Thanks Sam
