I took it all apart and sanded with 200 grit on an old glass window. put it back on and... well it still leaks. but now just a little drip on the engine side. at this point i will probably use a little rtv and be done with it. here in south georgia its already in the 80s and wtr temp is 71 so I need to get it back on the river. thanks for the info.

Also, if you over tighten the bolts, it'll never seal either.

well you need to make sure the the t-stat is seated in the recessed section of the housing other wise it will never seal.

Oh, I forgot, that rtv will make your boat explode. And I was only refering to using a little bit, not globs of it.

Joe, Once you hit the surface with ether the stone or the abrasive paper on glass like the Doc mentioned, you will be able to see any high spots or warpage. Give it a try first before going to the RTV. The RTV is really not the correct way to go.
Only Eric uses it to put his transmissions back together!!!! |

There is a problem with the mating surfaces, either you did not clean both surfaces well ot the thermostat housing is warped.
Either way applying RTV is a half assed way to correct the leak.It did not come from the factory with that blue stuff on it , why not do it right now. A sheet of 80 grit sandpaper and a sheet of glass of other flat surface and a few minutes of your time will solve the leakage, and look superior to a shade tree fix.......Boat dr A shot of 3-M spray adhesive will hold the gasket in place also and not look like doo doo.......... |

Use rtv and the gasket. Actually, the rtv will hold the gasket in place while you're bolting it together.

I did have to scrape the old gasket off. I used a scraper blade then some sandpaper on a flat surface. it looked pretty smooth.
should I just remove the gasket and use blue rtv? |

Get some blue RTV and smear a little on the intake and thermo housing.

Joe, The thiner the gasket is, the smoother and flatter the mating surfaces need to be. Did you have to pry the old one off? Just wondering if maybe you nicked one or both mating surfaces. You should open it up and stone the surfaces. You can use a good sharpening stone.

Yesterday I changed out my thermostat and gasket and now it leaks. I scraped all of the old gasket of of the housing down to the metal,and replaced it with the gasket that came with the new thermostat. It looks like its cheap paper type material. I am scared that I will break the bolts if i get it any tighter. how do I stop the leak? liquid gasket stuff?
