There is a very good chance that the engine is the original. Both the 225 and 325 HP Mercruisers were available in the boat in 68. 68 would have been late for a Gray. In 66 Gray was still around with the 401. The Gray also would have been painted red.
Also, you can't go by the year a engine was discontinued in the automotive versions as it was typical to produce the marines for several years after. My 64 312 is a good example.

Keep it original, Pete

I don't know when they stopped making the nailheads. They were the standard engine in the car through 66. The boat was introduced in 66, and given only two engine choices, the 318 or the 401, I still think they chose the name based on the motor.

Brian, I thought about that, but I think the Nailhead was last used in cars 66, so 68 would be 2 years past its production.

btw, I just looked in the diaries and of the 7 Wildcats listed.. none are Buick! Looks like Chrysler majority...

Well, I think they called it a Wildcat in the first place because they offered a Buick 401cu. in. motor, marinized by Gray. The 401 was the most popular motor in the Buick Wildcat. Not sure.

Similar to the Barracuda, Mustang, etc.

When the Classic is done, aka in about 5 years. I don't have a room for a boat orphanage like you and Mr. P.

So, it is probably doubtful that she is reverse rotation then, right? Thats a bummer.

You going to be at GL on Thurs?

Steve, I question whether that SBC is original. The fact its painted black reminds me of the Target motors used as replacements in cars. Also,I dont think it would be original as a 350. In 68 if the Chevy was used, I'd bet it would have probably been a 307, or maybe a 327.

Soooo, when you gonna go get her?

I checked into this a few months ago. I really like the color and wouldn't mind a larger boat (in addition to the Classic). IIRC, the owner died and a friend of the family is selling the boat. I couldn't get any really good info though, like original gel, floor, stringer, motor, etc. I wouldn't bank on it being a GM 350, unless you can see a pic and know for sure.
