I like mine to return to center, but I'm not sure which is correct. I just put 3/16" packing in mine(3 layers) and it turns nicely. Maybe your's got 1/4" in it?

I recently had some new packing put in rudder gland. The steering is stiff and does not return to center when I let go of the wheel. Should it hold position when you let go or should it snap back to center?
