yeah we just bought a set of boat hoops a bit ago, so it'll be out of the water most of the time. And yeah we're definitely taking our time, filling, sanding, filling, sanding, priming, sanding....we don't even have all of the primer on yet & it looks better than it did.

Good Luck on your project , take your time do it right the first time and it will be better than it was new , Awl Grip is awesome paint , just remeber it is not recomended to stay in the water or any paint other than bottom paint will bubble and peel off , I have talked to Awl Grip about this .
If you keep it on a lift or trailer you should be fine .

Hi Farkum,


what are the details on your efi retrofit?
what part and ecm are you using?

I recently picked up upper and lower manifold, throttle body and some related parts and am considering going efi on my '77 Martinique.

I would be interested in what approach you are taking.

im pretty sure they won't return through our finish, we've braced the gunwhales & the front deck where they might be stepped on to cause the cracks, cleaned them & filled with west system epoxy resin. Everyone we know who has done this before & knows alot about fiberglass said this is the best way to go. So im gonna have to say they won't be back.

We're restoring my '78 right now and we had to deal with tons of those. we sanded down the whole boat, cleaned it & then West System'd the entire boat, from here we sanded the boat again to knock the shine off the epoxy, by doing this it filled all of thosy pesky cracks. Then we coated the boat with Awlgrip 8001 epoxy primer & proceeded to sand this again. Then apply Awlgrip High build epoxy primer, block sanded to fair out, re-prime as needed and continue fairing process. When finished seal with Awlgrip sealer and than apply AwlCraft 2000 acrylic Urethane.

That sounds like a good idea. I am gonna have to do some more reading on how to match colors with gelcoat. I know it doesnt have to be exact becasue I will be painting over it but hey, what better time to learn how to do these things.

Yes, grinding the cracks out with a Dremel is a workable solution. You can fill with Bondo, but the better solution would be to fill with gelcoat (prior to prime and paint) so you get similiar materials that behave the same.

yeah there is a lot of stress cracks in the glass on this boat so I have a lot of sanding to do. I was thinking of using a dremel to widen all the stress cracks down to fiberglass then fill it in, sand smooth, prime, paint. Has anyone else had to deal wiht a ton of really really small stress cracks in the gel coat? What did you do to get rid of them or make sure they didnt show up in the paint?

I believe Imron (Dupont) or equivalent is the paint type mostly used to paint boats. I think that prepwork mostly just entails a good sanding of the existing gelcoat, then primer and paint. I would take special precautions at stress cracks and probablly sand them out to bare fiberglass, then fill, prime and paint. If you dont, you risk having the cracks showing through.

Another thing that I could use is a jpg of the actual Ski Nautique label. I could not find that font (and if I remember right it was another font slightly edited) so I just used something that looked good.

I decided that while doing the efi retrofit to my boat I am also going to paint it. Well probably not at the same time but while it is in the garage before summer comes. I have a couple of questions about what kind of paint to use and how to prep the boat but I will try using the search feature to find most of those answers. My big question is what do you guys think of this look. Along with that I want to replace the broken correct craft labels on the side of the boat and was wondering if anyone had one that I could buy off them.

All of the maroon would be outlined with a metaflake red to make it stand out more. Also that maroon color will be as close to the stock maroon as possible because thats what I had all the interior redone to match.
