Reid

I have a performer intake. Holley makes a shorter flame arrestor check summit racing for the dimensions to see if it might help.

Before you invest a significant amount of $$ in an Air Gap, check your engine box for clearance. We just attempted to install one in a Mustang on a Chrysler, with your same engine box and it wouldn't close. We then went with an older Edelbrock, still tall, but it fit. The standard Edelbrock or other mfgr's intakes will fit for sure on a Ford.

79Nautique, what intake are you running on yours?

And for the record, the '68-'72? Chrysler engines with the dual water pump and no circulating pump can't use an aftermarket/automotive intake without modifications for waterflow. We just found this out and are working thru it right now. If anyone has gone thru this already, please chime in.

If you're interested in upgrading your ignition I would recommend a marine GM style HEI distributor from Performance Distributors.

http://www.performancedistributors.com/marinedui.htm

This will give you a custom and more accurate advance curve and will clean up some of the ignition mess on the top of the engine. At $450 ($375 + $75 for reverse rotation gear) it's a little pricey but I think it was worth it. I've got one on my '79 Nautique and it's worked great.

Here's my .02

an edlebrock performer or air gap manifold would be a better choice than the RPM versions since you realy have a stock engine and wouldn't see much over 4500 rpm.

A mallory YLU-554-CV electronic dist. MSD does not make a 351W dist. for the marine industry.

A hotter coil MSD blaster HVC or simular.

You could replace the points with an electronic conversion kit instead of replacing the whole distributor which for the above model mallory runs 325-350 bucks at summit racing, don't get it from JEG's, it's a special order and will take months verses days for summit.

I am currently doing some winter upgrades and I'm not sure what I need. I have a 76 Ski Nautique with the original 351w. The engine has a fresh set of rings and I would like to up grade the intake and ignition. The current ignition is a single point set up. I was thinking about an MSD, is this what I need. If so which one? What intake should I use? I was looking at an RPM AIR GAP, but the power curve is 1500-6000 is this ok. Should I find one that is from idle-5000? Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks Brad
