Tim, cudo's for you doing something more than bitchin'. The trust fund for college is a great idea , BUT.........
If you believe in research and the data that goes with those numbers , read on.
The CDC has concluded the alcoholism is indeed a disease, and it is passed on from parent to sibling.Furthermore these numbers also conclude that there is a 50/50 chance that their son will repeat their behavior if there is an alcoholic or drug addict as a parent.
From the data you provided he will receive those genes from both parents. While a quality education will provide for his monetary needs this will not be a cure for the disease that has ruined his family.
You need to do a little more research on the role that AA has provided for the active and recovering alcoholic as well as the Al-Anon program for the spouses and children .
Info will show you that most active alcoholics are well above normal IQ ratings. Our problem is not the lack of education, the problem lies in our inability to STOP> No matter what the consequences are.
Without the program of AA there are but three choices.....
#1 JAILS
#2 INSTITUTIONS
#3 DEATH

Thank God there was an AA room for me to walk into 20 years ago, or I would not be typing this now.........Billy/Karen
Just for ***************s and giggles; I met Karen at an AA meeting. Became friends, dated and eventually married that wonderful lady.

Tragic scenario for sure. One that impacts more kids than we'll ever know. If there's no one else in this young man's life to watch over his best interests, more of this will go on.. Nice of you to step up Tim !!!

Well you can't fault them for trying, even if it was not your choice for donations. AA could have and might help prevent stuff from getting to this point (death). I would have chosen something to benefit the child as well though.

So this is bothering me:

One of the kids on our ski team has pretty much useless parents. They are addicted to drugs and alcohol. Both parents have been in and out of jail through the years.

His grandparents have pretty much raised him, and they finally got legal custody of him. He is a great kid and also a great skier.

His mother has been totally out of the picture for a couple years now. His dad has been trying to get his life together and has had some downfalls.

This week his father passed away. I have no details why or how.

I received the information on the arrangements today. All donations are to go to the AA chapter.

That really bothered me. Here this kid has pretty much lost both parents and they don't set up a trust fund for his College. I think AA is great but it should go to his son for something worthwhile such as college.

Grr.....

Tim
